Wildfires rage across the Carolinas; South Carolina governor issues state of emergency

wildfires in CarolinasDozens of wildfires raged across North and South Carolina on Sunday, prompting officials to issue evacuation orders and open emergency shelters as both states and much of the Eastern Seaboard contended with dry conditions and gusty winds.

In South Carolina, 175 wildfires burned across the state, scorching over 4,200 acres of land and straining firefighting resources, according to the state fire marshal's office. Response operations were ongoing in various areas, including Horry, Spartanburg, Union, Oconee, and Pickens counties.

The largest of the brush fires erupted Saturday in Carolina Forest, a community west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fire exploded in size overnight, forcing residents in at least a half dozen neighborhoods to flee their homes, officials said.

Israel approves extension of Gaza ceasefire

Extension of cease fire okayed

The Israeli government has approved a temporary extension of the Gaza ceasefire for the next six weeks, covering the Muslim Ramadan and Jewish Passover periods.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office made the announcement shortly after the first phase of the previously agreed ceasefire expired at midnight on Saturday.

Netanyahu's office said that under a ceasefire proposal by US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff, half of the hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza - both alive and dead - would be released on the first day.

The remaining hostages would be freed "if an agreement on a permanent ceasefire is reached".

Hamas has not publicly commented on the latest Israeli move.

Ukraine secures £2.26 billion UK loan for weapons production after failed Trump talks

Starmer and ZelenskyyThe United Kingdom has pledged a £2.26 billion ($2.84 billion) loan to Ukraine in a move designed to strengthen Kyiv's defence industry. Announced on Saturday, the agreement will be repaid using profits from frozen Russian sovereign assets, a decision Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as "true justice. The one who started the war must be the one to pay."

The loan was finalised during a virtual signing ceremony between UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Ukraine's Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted Zelenskyy in London, reaffirming Britain's continued commitment to Ukraine’s war effort.
A significant portion of the loan will be allocated to ramping up weapons production within Ukraine. This aligns with Kyiv's broader push to bolster domestic arms manufacturing, reducing reliance on external suppliers while maintaining military resistance against Russian forces.

Ageing nuclear plant in Florida at risk from climate crisis, advocates warn

Ageing nuclear plant in Florida

A decision by regulators to extend the life of two of the oldest reactors in the US decades beyond their original permits has elevated the risk of a nuclear disaster in heavily populated south Florida, environmental groups are warning.

The Miami Waterkeeper says the ageing Turkey Point facility in south Miami-Dade county, which was built in 1967 and generates power for a metropolitan area covering about 3 million people, is especially vulnerable to flooding and excessive heat from the climate emergency, in part because of its low-lying position and coastal exposure to a major hurricane.

‘I was in shock’: DC gallery pulls exhibits of Black and LGBTQ+ artists amid Trump DEI crackdown

Art Museum of the Americas

A Washington DC art gallery has abruptly cancelled two exhibitions featuring Black and LGBTQ+ artists, prompting accusations that it has caved in to Donald Trump’s crackdown on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes.

The Art Museum of the Americas, run by the Organization of American States (OAS), was due to present the shows Nature’s Wild with Andil Gosine and Before the Americas in March.

The decision to pull the exhibits coincided with an executive order issued by the Trump administration directing a review of relationships with international organisations that receive US funding. To Gosine, it is an alarming example of pre-emptive capitulation – obeying in advance.

Judge Rules Head Of Watchdog Agency Must Keep His Job, Says Trump's Bid To Oust Him Was Unlawful

DellingerThe head of a federal watchdog agency must remain in his job, a judge in Washington ruled on Saturday, saying President Donald Trump’s bid to remove the special counsel was unlawful.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson sided with Hampton Dellinger, who leads the Office of Special Counsel, in a legal battle over the president’s authority to oust the head of the independent agency that’s likely headed back to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Dellinger sued Trump last month after he was fired, even though the law says special counsels can be removed by the president “only for inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office.” Jackson, who was nominated to the bench by Democratic president Barack Obama, quickly reinstated Dellinger in the job while he pursued his case.

Ex-Trump Confidant Blasts President for ‘Shameful’ Showdown: ‘Bully Insulting a War Hero’

Rivera shames Trump

Former Fox News host Geraldo Rivera slammed the president on Friday for his “shameful” face-off with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The veteran newscaster and longtime Republican was once a close friend of President Donald Trump but turned against him after bearing witness to his “irrational behavior” and “narcissism.”

Rivera called the so-called Ukraine-U.S. peace talks “scripted” and said Trump unfairly “ambushed” Zelensky during the volatile showdown.

“I just could not believe what I was seeing,” he told NewsNation’s Connell McShane. “It was President Trump at his worst, President Trump as an ill-mannered bully insulting a war hero.”

Trump economic approval ratings sag as inflation fears grow

Trump pollsAccording to February Gallup polling, 42 percent of Americans are giving a thumbs up to Trump’s economic stewardship while 54 percent are giving him a thumbs down.

Approval of Trump’s handling of the economy also fell to 39 percent from 43 percent in polling released last week by Reuters/Ipsos.

This is notably a lower mark compared to the start of Trump’s first term in 2017, when his economic approval stood at 53 percent. While this could reflect less enthusiasm about the economy more generally, it is also a notable thing to watch for the president’s team.

On the economy, some polls still indicate Americans are worried about the direction.

Polling released this week by Reuters/Ipsos shows that 44 percent of Americans think the employment and jobs situation is heading in the wrong direction, compared to 33 percent who think it’s heading in the right direction.
