A government funding package championed by Republican House speaker Mike Johnson failed to pass on Wednesday, with less than two weeks left to prevent a shutdown starting 1 October.

The final vote was 202 to 220, with 14 House Republicans and all but three House Democrats opposing the bill. Two Republican members voted “present”.

The bill was not expected to pass, as a number of House Republicans had voiced criticism of the proposal before the vote. Given Republicans’ narrow House majority and Democrats’ widespread opposition to the bill, Johnson could only afford a handful of defections within his conference. Johnson delayed a vote on the funding package last week in the hopes of consolidating Republicans’ support, but those efforts could not get the bill across the finish line.

A shark attack just days after her graduation from Yale last May left former Division I swimmer Ali Truwit with an amputated leg and a host of questions.

“I’m a lifelong athlete — 10 days before the attack I’d run a marathon with my mom,” Truwit told The Kelly Clarkson Show earlier this year. “And I was sitting there thinking, ‘Am I ever going to run again? Am I ever going to be able to be an athlete again?' ”

The answer is an Olympic-sized yes.

Eleven additional sets of human remains have been found in connection with the 1921 Tulsa, Oklahoma, race riots, three of which have gunshot wounds, the city said Friday.

Two of the victims have gunshot wounds from two different weapons, and one had signs of possible burns.

The remains were found over the span of 25 days and will be sent to a forensics lab for identification. It is the fourth cycle of excavations completed at Tulsa’s Oaklawn Cemetery, the city said in a Facebook post.

The Democratic governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, withdrew from consideration for Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential pick in part because he feared his extremist Republican lieutenant governor could try to seize power – or at least the spotlight – in his absence.

“Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor, is the most extreme statewide candidate in the country right now,” Cooper told Politico in an article published on Saturday, as Harris prepared to name her choice to take on Donald Trump and JD Vance. Harris’s decision is expected before a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

“If I were to be out of state at a campaign event, if I had been the vice-presidential nominee, he could claim he was acting governor,” Cooper said.

The Pentagon moved Friday to bolster defenses in the Middle East as tensions spike following the assassinations of Iranian-backed militant leaders by Israel, officials said.

Late Friday, the Pentagon announced that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group in the region as well as additional ballistic missile defense warships, according to Sabrina Singh, the deputy Pentagon press secertary.

Austin also ordered the deployment of an additional fighter squadron to the Middle East, Singh said in a statement. A Defense official identified those warplanes as F-22s, the Air Force's most sophisticated warplanes. An attack by Iran or its proxies on Israel is expected, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

A former FBI agent and Alabama state trooper convicted of child sexual assault was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

Christopher Bauer, 45, was sentenced in Alabama Circuit Court after a conviction in June on charges of first-degree sodomy and sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years of age.

"It is always extremely disappointing when someone who is supposed to enforce and uphold the law commits a crime against the people they have sworn to protect," Mongomery District Attorney Daryl Bailey said in a news release. "He is a bad apple – a depraved monster who abused his power to irreparably harm a vulnerable, innocent child."
