Senate clears key military nomination after Tuberville drops hold on Army general

Sen. Tommy TubervilleThe Senate on Wednesday quietly cleared a key military nomination for commanding general of the U.S. Army in the Pacific after Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) dropped his hold on the nominee.

Lt. Gen. Ronald Clark, the senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, was confirmed to be a general for the commanding Army job in the Pacific by a voice vote in the Senate shortly after Tuberville’s hold was dropped. Other military nominations were also confirmed.

Tuberville had been holding up Clark’s four-star nomination, which requires Senate approval, since at least early September over concerns he was deeply involved in Austin’s hospitalization scandal earlier this year.

US Navy sailor detained in Venezuela for unknown reason, officials say

Navy detained in VenezuelaA United States Navy sailor is being detained in Venezuela after traveling to the country while on personal leave, and without authorization from military authorities, officials said.

White House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby confirmed the detainment of the sailor during a news briefing.

"My understanding was that this individual was on some sort of personal travel and not on official government business,” Kirby said. “We’re obviously in touch, as appropriate as you’d think we would be, with Venezuelan authorities to try and get more knowledge and information about this.”

The State Department also announced that it is closely following the detention.

It remains unclear why the sailor was detained, but this situation coincides with continuous turmoil between Washington and Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

7 U.S. troops hurt in Iraq raid targeting Islamic State group militants that killed 15

7 US troops hurt in IraqThe United States military and Iraq launched a joint raid targeting suspected Islamic State group militants in the country's western desert that killed at least 15 people and saw seven American troops hurt, officials said Saturday.

For years after dislodging the militants from their self-declared caliphate across Iraq and Syria, U.S. forces have fought the Islamic State group, though the casualties from this raid were higher than in previous ones.

The U.S. military's Central Command alleged the militants were armed with “numerous weapons, grenades, and explosive ‘suicide’ belts” during the attack Thursday, which Iraqi forces said happened in the country's Anbar Desert.

Army says Arlington National Cemetery staffer was 'abruptly pushed aside' during Trump campaign visit this week. Here's what's happened in the days since.

Arlington scandal

The U.S. Army on Thursday said that an Arlington National Cemetery employee was "abruptly pushed aside" earlier this week during a dispute with members of the Trump campaign.

Former President Donald Trump visited the cemetery in Arlington, Va., on Monday to attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He was with the families of the 13 American troops who were killed when the U.S. military pulled its troops from Afghanistan in 2021.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, Trump accompanied the families and two Marines who were injured in the attack, Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews and Corporal Kelsee Lainhart, to Section 60 of the cemetery. It’s an area that’s mostly reserved for U.S. veterans who have been killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The service members Trump was honoring were killed in a suicide bombing at Abbey Gate at the airport in Kabul on Aug. 26, 2021.
