US quietly carries out counter-ISIS operations

Central Command attcking ISISU.S. forces in the Middle East have killed 163 Islamic State group militants and captured another 33 in dozens of operations in Iraq and Syria since late August, U.S. Central Command said in a Monday statement.

Since Aug. 29, more than 95 Defeat ISIS (D-ISIS) operations, some of which included strikes in Syria, “resulted in 163 terrorists killed and 33 captured, including over 30 senior and mid-level ISIS leaders,” according to the command, which oversees American forces in the region.

“These successful operations resulted in the seizure of significant enemy materiel that could aid in future disruptions,” the statement notes, adding that the sustained pressure on ISIS leaders has hindered their ability to operate and to plan attacks.

A US army soldier has been charged with murder in the death of a fellow service member at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, the military announced Thursday.

The army office of Special Trial Counsel charged the 21-year-old specialist Wooster Rancy on Wednesday with murder and obstructing justice in the death of 23-year-old Sgt Sarah Roque.

Originally from Ligonier, Indiana, Roque worked as a mine-detecting dog handler – was reported missing 20 October. Her body was discovered in a trash bin on the base two days later.

Roque is at least the third Hispanic female US army soldier to be murdered in a high-profile case since 2020.

The Jan. 6 riot included Marines. The military is wrestling with the consequences

Jan6 included Marines

“Have you ever tried to overthrow the U.S. government?”

If you’re trying to get top secret security clearance for a government job, that’s a standard question for the required polygraph exam. And the answer, obviously, should be no.

But Josh Abate couldn’t say no if he wanted to pass the test.

“It depends,” he said, when he took the exam in early 2022 for an internship.

The polygrapher paused and asked him to elaborate.

“Well, on January 6th, I went into the Capitol building.”

That was the first time Abate, a 24-year-old sergeant in the Marines, had talked openly about what he did that day.

At that point, he was doing well in the Marines. He made sergeant early, got a Navy commendation medal and was selected for this coveted internship with the National Security Agency.

Judge orders Pentagon to release records of Trump controversial Arlington Cemetery visit

Arlington records to be releasedA federal judge on Tuesday ordered Army officials to release internal records regarding former President Donald Trump’s controversial August visit to Arlington National Cemetery by the end of the week.

Judge Paul Friedman of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted the request Monday in response to a lawsuit brought by American Oversight, a non-partisan group dedicated to getting the government to release records. He signed the order Tuesday, the group said.

American Oversight said it sued for the rapid release of military records, including any incident reports from the Aug. 26 incident, following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

Pentagon confirms ‘incursions’ of unauthorized drones over Air Force base

Drones over PentagonThe Pentagon has confirmed a number of “unauthorized” drone flights last year in restricted airspace over a Virginia base that houses the nation’s most advanced fighter jets.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that for 17 days in December, a fleet of the unidentified aircraft flew over Langley Air Force Base as well as over the area that includes the Navy’s SEAL Team Six home base and Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval port.

Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh on Tuesday confirmed Langley “did experience incursions of unauthorized unmanned aerial systems last year in December 2023.”

She said the number of those unmanned aerial system (UAS) incursions fluctuated on any given day but didn’t appear to exhibit any hostile intent.

“It’s something that we have kept our eye on, but I just don’t have more to provide on that,” Singh told reporters.
