A US army private who fled to North Korea just over a year ago will plead guilty to desertion and four other charges and take responsibility for his conduct, his lawyer said on Monday.
Travis King’s attorney, Franklin D Rosenblatt, told the Associated Press that King intends to admit guilt to a total of five military offenses, including desertion and assaulting an officer. Nine other offenses, including possession of sexual images of a child, will be withdrawn and dismissed under the terms of the deal.
Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard accused of leaking classified U.S. national security documents online, was arraigned on Friday on charges brought by the U.S. Air Force that he violated military laws.

A former US air force survival expert with militia and Christian nationalist connections is running survival and live-fire combat trainings in remote locations throughout the Pacific north-west, boasting on his website that the training incorporates trained law enforcement officers, “church security” operatives, and current and former US military members.
Michael Patrick Caughran’s new training business, American Reconstruction Concepts (ARC) shows organizational and personnel continuities with an earlier organization that explicitly offered “biblical training on war” to young people. That organization, Team Rugged, was directly connected with both a neo-Confederate pastor and a former Washington state legislator who has advocated for Christian nationalism, who a state house investigation found to have participated in “domestic terrorism”.
More than 80 whistleblowers have testified that leaders at the Coast Guard Academy ignored decades of systemic sexual assault and harassment, in a new report released by a powerful government committee Wednesday.
The US Senate’s homeland security and government affairs subcommittee on investigations said sexual assault and harassment have been “fleet-wide problems” for the federal agency, “impacting enlisted members and officers just as pervasively as cadets”.
The report said: “For far too long, Coast Guard survivors have felt unheard and unseen. They have been brushed aside and silenced.”
Across its 48 pages, the report details how the academy fostered a culture that was “highly skeptical” of incidents being reported, silenced victims and enabled abuse.
