Nearly all of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson's campaign staff quits after CNN report

Robinson campaign staff quits

Days after a CNN report about racist and sexual comments posted on a pornography forum, all but a few of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson's campaign team quit their jobs on Sunday.

A campaign news release said that four top staffers have left the campaign: Conrad Pogorzelski, general consultant and senior advisor who's worked for Robinson since his initial 2020 lieutenant governor campaign; Chris Rodriguez, campaign manager; Heather Whillier, finance director; and Jason Rizk, deputy campaign manager.

But WUNC has confirmed that other staffers have quit as well, leaving Robinson with just three people working on his campaign — two campaign spokesmen and a bodyguard. The list of departures also include longtime director of operations Patrick Riley and political directors John Kontoulas and Jackson Lohrer.

A new 'mini-moon' comes to Earth this fall

New mini moon this fall

Earth will be hosting a new guest this fall.

No, it's not an alien. It's an asteroid.

The space rock, which has been named “2024 PT5,” has been traveling along its normal path around the sun, but will be temporarily pulled into Earth's gravitational orbit later this month.

The object, which is around 33 feet long, was first spotted by researchers in South Africa, who wrote about it in the journal Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society this month.

Some scientists have described 2024 PT5 as a “mini-moon.”

In U.N. vote, countries show willingness to move away from fossil fuels

UN members vote to move way from fossil fuels

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a global pact on Sunday that included explicit calls to phase out fossil fuels — which has been a stubborn sticking point in climate change talks for decades.

The call to move away from fossil fuels is outlined in the “Pact of the Future” — a broad plan for the U.N.'s 193 member nations to work together across a range of challenges, from escalating conflicts to rising poverty to climate change. Warning that inaction on various issues threatens to push people around the world “into a future of persistent crisis and breakdown,” the document also laid out a framework for digital cooperation and artificial intelligence governance.

In a press release, the U.N. said the agreement was years in the making. The goal was to address the problems of today, as well as anticipate the troubles of tomorrow. It was reached at the opening of the two-day “Summit of the Future" in advance of the 79th session of the U.N. General Assembly, which kicks off on Tuesday.

Ohio residents flock to Springfield’s Haitian restaurants: ‘They are family

Customers at Creole restaurant in Springfield, OhioThe line down the center of the Rose Goute Creole restaurant on Springfield, Ohio’s South Limestone Street is halfway out the door. It’s been like this ever since former president Donald Trump falsely accused immigrants in Springfield of eating cats and dogs during a televised debate on 10 September.

At the back of the restaurant, kitchen staff scramble to take orders and load plates of herring patties, rice and beans, and barbecued chicken legs on to serving trays. Outside, cars with plates from Georgia, Wisconsin and Indiana – diners who’ve stopped off a nearby highway to show support for the Haitian community – fill the parking lot.

It’s a partly chaotic scene, as Dady Fanfan, a 41-year-old from Plaisance in northern Haiti, stands inside the door, greeting diners as they enter, before slipping away to clear nearby tables.

College swimmers suspended after racial slur scratched on to student’s body

College swim team member cut N word onto student's chest

At least two students at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania have been suspended from the swim team after a report that a racial slur was scratched onto a student’s body, officials said.

Officials received “a deeply concerning report of a racial slur being scratched on to a student using a plastic or ceramic tool,” officials at the liberal arts school said in a statement last week.

“This is a serious report, which is being actively assessed through the student conduct process,” the college said. “At this point, the students involved are not participating in swim team activities.”

The school declined to release further details, citing the investigation and privacy laws.

Interim NYPD commissioner says federal agents searched his homes, seized materials

Interim NYPD CommissionerThe interim New York City Police Department (NYPD) commissioner said in a statement posted Saturday to the social platform X that federal agents searched his homes and seized materials.

“This is not a department matter, and the department will not be commenting,” the statement continued.

Republican Policies Are Making It Harder For Trans People To Vote — And Do Everyday Life

Transgender voting issuesBrandyn Gallagher should be on the road right now. Instead, the 36-year-old, who has spent the last five years driving an 18-wheeler, is at home in northeast Arkansas looking for a new job.

Gallagher doesn’t want to give up trucking. They pivoted to the profession after working as a consultant for diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and were happy it provided some financial stability to help pay off their student loans. But they are worried that a new state rule about gender markers on driver’s licenses might put them at risk when they’re on the road.

In March, Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed an emergency order eliminating the “X” gender-neutral marker option, which had been in place for 14 years. Gallagher has an X on their license to denote their identity as a trans and intersex person. The order also forces trans people to provide an amended birth certificate with their correct gender marker, which they can obtain only after getting a court order and presenting medical documentation of surgery, before they can change the gender marker on their license.

'Grieving-type screaming': 4 dead in mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama

mass shooting in Alabama

At least four people were killed, more than a dozen were wounded and a search was underway Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, after a shooting rampage in a crowded entertainment district Saturday night.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said two men and a woman died at the scene and a fourth died a short time later at a local hospital. First responders rushed some wounded people to hospitals while others began arriving at hospitals around the city on their own, he said.

Fitzgerald said it appeared multiple shooters fired into a crowd but that it was not clear whether they were on foot or in cars. He said the shooting did not appear random and that officers were trying to determine who was targeted. No suspects were in custody.
