Justice Department revokes Biden-era protections for reporters in leak investigations

protections for jounalists removed

The Justice Department on Friday rescinded a Biden-era policy that provided protections to journalists in leak investigations, paving the way for authorities to once again use subpoenas and compel testimony from reporters in probes targeting leakers.

"Federal government employees intentionally leaking sensitive information to the media undermines the ability of the Department of Justice to uphold the rule of law, protect civil rights, and keep America safe. This conduct is illegal and wrong, and it must stop," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in an internal memo issued on Friday and obtained by NPR.

She said the DOJ's policy allows for subpoenas, court orders and search warrants to get information and testimony from journalists. Such actions must be approved by DOJ leadership and journalists must get advance notice of them. The actions also must be as narrow as possible to avoid interfering with news gathering or "potentially protected materials," the memo states.

Facing shortages, cities tap sewers to bolster drinking water supply

water supply shrinking

On a hot day, there’s nothing quite like a refreshing drink of water. But how would you feel if that water was sourced from the sewer?

As cities across the West brace for a drier future, they’re investing in advanced water purification technology. It flushes out the contaminants in wastewater so that the murky stuff that goes down your toilet can eventually come out ready to drink at your sink.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty here in terms of water resources, so we think that this is that next bucket of water that we need to tap into,” said Nazario Prieto, assistant director of Phoenix Water Services.

The city of 1.6 million people is building its first advanced water purification plant that could eventually process up to 15 million gallons of wastewater a day.

Mighty And Meek Say Farewell To Pope Francis During Vatican Funeral And Last Popemobile Ride

Pope funeralWorld leaders and rank-and-file Catholic faithful bade farewell to Pope Francis in a funeral Saturday that highlighted his concern for people on the peripheries and reflected his wish to be remembered as a simple pastor. Though presidents and princes attended the Mass in St. Peter’s Square, prisoners and migrants welcomed Francis’ coffin at his final resting place in a basilica across town.

According to Vatican estimates, some 250,000 people flocked to the funeral Mass at the Vatican and 150,000 more lined the motorcade route through downtown Rome to witness the first funeral procession for a pope in a century. They clapped and cheered “Papa Francesco” as his simple wooden coffin traveled aboard a modified popemobile to St. Mary Major Basilica, some 6 kilometers (3.5-miles) away.

As bells tolled, the pallbearers brought the coffin past several dozen migrants, prisoners and homeless people holding white roses outside the basilica. Once inside, the pallbearers stopped in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary that Francis loved. Four children deposited the roses at the foot of the altar before cardinals performed the burial rite at his tomb in a nearby niche.

Court Blocks Trump's Federal Union-Busting Plan, Calling It 'Unlawful'

trump union busting deniedA federal judge issued an injunction late Friday temporarily blocking the Trump administration from stripping collective bargaining rights from hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

Judge Paul L. Friedman, of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, wrote in his brief order that the White House’s policy meant to weaken unions is “unlawful.” Friedman said the court would offer its reasoning for that determination in a forthcoming opinion.

In late March, President Donald Trump signed an executive order carving a long list of agencies out of federal labor law protections in the name of “national security.” But many of the affected employees, including nurses, biologists and park rangers, don’t do any national security work.
