The two people who guaranteed bail for George Santos will have their names publicly revealed, a federal judge ruled, rejecting the indicted Republican congressman’s claim that the disclosure could threaten the guarantors’ safety.
Joanna Seybert, a US district judge in Central Islip, New York, said the names would be made public on Thursday at 12pm ET.
Seybert said Santos could in the meantime try to modify the terms of his release if his guarantors, who he has suggested are family members, withdraw their $500,000 guarantee.
Santos, 34, has expressed a willingness to go to jail rather than release the names.
Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday made his first public remarks after the historic indictment of former President Donald Trump on federal criminal charges.
Garland, taking questions at an event on combating violent crime, said he couldn't discuss particulars of the case but offered general praise for special counsel Jack Smith and his team after being asked about accusations made by Trump and other Republicans that the Justice Department has been "weaponized."
"As I said when I appointed Mr. Smith, I did so because it underscores the Justice Department's commitment to both independence and accountability," the attorney general said. "Mr. Smith is a veteran career prosecutor. He has assembled a group of experienced and talented prosecutors and agents who share his commitment to integrity. Any questions about this matter will have to be answered by their filings in court."
Two men who were active-duty members of the Marines Corps when they stormed the U.S. Capitol pleaded guilty on Monday to riot-related criminal charges.
Joshua Abate and Dodge Dale Hellonen are scheduled to be sentenced in September by U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes. Both pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Columbia.

Former president Donald Trump landed in Miami today ahead of his arraignment on 37 charges over his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House.
The former president flew from Newark Liberty International Airport to Miami International Airport on Monday afternoon, to spend the night at his Mar-a-Lago estate – the Florida home where he is accused of hoarding troves of classified papers, including national defence information.

A high-ranking lieutenant in the Washington, D.C., police department was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday morning for allegedly obstructing justice and making false statements about his relationship with Enrique Tarrio, the longtime chairman of the far-right Proud Boys.
The indictment, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, alleges that Lieutenant Shane Lamond and Tarrio exchanged hundreds of messages as Lamond helped Tarrio understand police investigations into his group, particularly around the time of the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Lamond could not immediately be reached for comment, and federal court records did not yet indicate who will represent him in court.
In an unsigned official statement, the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (MPD) said that Lamond was placed on administrative leave in February 2022 and that the department cooperated with the investigation.
