The founder of a neo-Nazi network that has proliferated rapidly around the world in recent years was sentenced in US federal court to two years of time served and two years of supervised release, capping a seven-year legal saga that has bewildered observers of the far right.

Robert Rundo, the 34-year-old founder of the neo-Nazi “Active Club” network, pleaded guilty in September of conspiracy to riot at a series of political rallies in California in 2017.

In a brief order, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the charity’s appeal that the denial violates the First Amendment’s religious protections.

“Put another way, it doesn’t matter if Catholic Charities gives a cup of water in Jesus’ name, because non-religious charities offer cups of water too,” the group wrote in its petition. “That absurd result deepens a split between state courts that require religious entities to conform to stereotypes to qualify for the ‘religious purposes’ exemption and those that do not.”

There were no undercover FBI agents on the National Mall on Jan. 6, 2021, as then-President Trump encouraged his supporters to march to the Capitol, according to the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of the Inspector General, rebutting a conspiracy theory surrounding the day’s events.

“We found no evidence in the materials we reviewed or the testimony we received showing or suggesting that the FBI had undercover employees in the various protest crowds, or at the Capitol, on January 6,” the inspector general concluded in an 88-page report reviewing the bureau’s response.

The conclusion rejects theories that undercover FBI agents provoked the attack on the Capitol, which has since prompted charges for more than 1,500 figures involved in the riot.

FBI Director Christopher Wray announced Wednesday he plans to resign from the agency, leaving his post ahead of President-Trump’s apparent plans to fire him.

“After weeks of careful thought, I’ve decided the right thing for the bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current administration in January and then step down,” Wray said in a town hall meeting.

“My goal is to keep the focus on our mission — the indispensable work you’re doing on behalf of the American people every day. In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.”

Trump nominated Kash Patel to lead the FBI, signifying his plans to fire Wray, whom he nominated to lead the investigation bureau in 2017 and who otherwise would not finish his term until 2027.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be ambassador to Israel, has long rejected a Palestinian state in territory previously seized by Israel and has repeatedly signaled his staunch support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Huckabee, a former TV host and Baptist preacher, frequently visits Israel and once said he wanted to buy a holiday home there. He has maintained throughout the years that the West Bank belongs to Israel, and recently said “the title deed was given by God to Abraham and to his heirs.”

His argument for a so-called “one-state solution” contradicts longstanding official U.S. support for the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state.

He has described the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas as “horrific” and " beyond anything I’ve ever witnessed in my lifetime” and argued that the U.S. needs to stand firmly behind Israel.
