DOJ Releases Special Counsel Jack Smith's Findings In Trump Jan. 6 Probe

Jck Smith reportThe Justice Department delivered part of special counsel Jack Smith’s report to Congress early Tuesday morning, explaining his charging decisions related to the probe into now-President-elect Donald Trump’s alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election leading up to and during the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The report was originally intended to include information about Smith’s prosecution of Trump for his alleged illegal retention of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida resort. But because the case is still active against two of Trump’s co-defendants, Attorney General Merrick Garland agreed to keep those details under wraps for now. That case is likely to unravel entirely once Trump takes office, so it is highly unlikely that the public will ever see that information.

Smith explicitly says he believes the department had enough evidence to obtain and sustain a conviction were Trump to stand trial.

The 137-page document was first obtained by The New York Times.

Michelle Obama won't be attending Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, her office says

Michelle ObamaFormer First Lady Michelle Obama won’t be attending President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20., her office said.

Her office did not provide a reason for why she will skip the inauguration.

"Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration," the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama said in a statement

Michelle Obama also missed former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral last week. CNN reported that she had a scheduling conflict and was in Hawaii on an extended family vacation.

TVNL Comment: Michelle Obama is a woman of integrity.  There is no doubt that her 'scheduling conflict' was a statement of that integrity.  She knows that Donald Trump originated the Birther movement, attacking her husband, and by extension her family.  Her absence from the inauguration says a lot.

Pro-Palestinian professor says she was forced out of Columbia University

Katherine Franke

A tenured law professor at Columbia University who advocated for pro-Palestinian students on campus says she was in effect forced out of the university, citing a “toxic and hostile environment for legitimate debate around the war in Israel and Palestine”.

Katherine Franke announced on Friday that she had reached an agreement with Columbia University that relieved her of her “obligations to teach or participate in faculty governance” after serving on the Columbia law faculty for 25 years.

“While the university may call this change in my status ‘retirement’, it should be more accurately understood as a termination dressed up in more palatable terms,” she said.

A spokesperson for Columbia University said in a statement to the Guardian that Columbia was “committed to being a community that is welcoming to all and our policies prohibit discrimination and harassment”.

Judge clears the way for release of special counsel Smith’s report on Trump’s 2020 election case

Smith report can be publishedThe Justice Department can publicly release special counsel Jack Smith’s investigative report on President-elect Donald Trump’s 2020 election interference case, a federal judge said Monday in the latest ruling in a court dispute over the highly anticipated document days before Trump is set to reclaim the White House.

But a temporary injunction barring the immediate release of the report remains in effect until Tuesday, and it’s unlikely U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon’s order will be the last word on the matter. Defense lawyers may seek to challenge it all the way up to the Supreme Court.

Steve Bannon condemns Elon Musk as ‘racist’ and ‘truly evil’

Steve BannonIn an escalation of discontent among the highest-profile far-right followers of Donald Trump, his former adviser Steve Bannon has called Trump’s newest favorite, Elon Musk, “racist” and a “truly evil guy”, pledging to “take this guy down” and kick him out of the Maga movement.

In an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper in Italy, excerpts of which were published this weekend by Breitbart, Bannon criticised Musk’s embrace of some forms of immigration and vowed to ensure that Musk does not have top-level access to the White House.

“He is a truly evil guy, a very bad guy. I made it my personal thing to take this guy down,” Bannon said. “Before, because he put money in, I was prepared to tolerate it – I’m not prepared to tolerate it any more.”

He added: “I will have Elon Musk run out of here by inauguration day”, which falls on 20 January. “He will not have full access to the White House. He will be like any other person.”

Vance says those who ‘committed violence’ on Jan. 6 ‘obviously’ shouldn’t be pardoned

jd vanceVice President-elect JD Vance said people who “committed violence” on Jan. 6, 2021, “obviously” shouldn’t be pardoned by President-elect Trump.

“I think it’s very simple, look, if you protested peacefully on Jan. 6, and you had Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice treat you like a gang member, you should be pardoned,” Vance said during an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

“If you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn’t be pardoned,” he continued. “And there’s a little bit of a gray area there.”

Vance said he and Trump are “very much committed” to the equal administration of law. He added that they believe there were people who were “prosecuted unfairly.”

“We need to rectify that,” Vance said.

Joe Biden got plenty right at home, but on the world stage he let himself be taken for a fool

Joe Biden

So what did Biden achieve and will it endure? His domestic successes are impressive. He revived a pandemic-stricken economy, created 16m jobs, boosted wages, new businesses and infrastructure spending, reduced the murder rate and curbed illegal immigration. His Inflation Reduction Act slashed healthcare costs and included $400bn to tackle the climate crisis. Stock markets are booming.

Hardly the national “disaster” his successor, Donald Trump, decries. Yet Biden was his own worst enemy. He pooh-poohed the impact on voters of high inflation. In denial about his physical and mental decline, he sought a second term after implying, in 2020, that he would not. He insisted that he could beat Trump, despite his dreadful poll numbers, then grudgingly gave Kamala Harris a hospital pass. Now he is a hiatus in the era of Trump. Trump may very possibly squander the economic gains of the past four years. In foreign policy, too, he could make many problems worse. The difference is that, in international affairs, Biden’s legacy borders on abysmal....
