Ukraine is fighting 50,000 troops in Russia’s Kursk region, Zelensky says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday Russia has deployed nearly 50,000 troops to Kursk, the southern Russian region where Kyiv launched its surprise counteroffensive in the summer.

Ukrainian troops “continue to hold back” the “nearly 50,000-strong enemy group” in Kursk, Zelensky said in a post on Telegram after receiving a briefing from General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

Kyiv launched its incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in August, taking by surprise not just Moscow, but also its allies. It said at the time, that the operation was necessary, because Russia had been planning to launch a new attack on Ukraine from the region. It said it was aiming to create a “buffer zone” to prevent future cross-border attacks.

The Kursk offensive, the first ground invasion of Russia by a foreign power since World War II, caught Moscow completely unprepared.

Israeli Strikes Kill Dozens In Lebanon And Northern Gaza While Netanyahu And Trump Speak

Israel strikes LebanonIsraeli strikes killed dozens of people including children on Sunday in Lebanon and isolated northern Gaza, as the world watched for signs of how the U.S. election might affect the war against Iranian-backed militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he has spoken three times with Donald Trump since Tuesday’s election and they “see eye-to-eye regarding the Iranian threat and all of its components.” Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

The Israeli airstrike in Lebanon killed at least 23 people including seven children in Aalmat village north of Beirut, far from the areas in the east and south where Hezbollah has a major presence. There was no Israeli evacuation warning. There was no immediate Israeli comment.

Hezbollah began firing rockets, drones and missiles into Israel after war broke out in Gaza, in solidarity with the Palestinians and Hamas. Israel retaliated, and a series of escalations have led to all-out war.

Netanyahu acknowledges Israel was behind Hezbollah pager, walkie-talkie attack

Netanyahu admits pager attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged for the first time that he greenlit an operation on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in September that saw thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies explode across Lebanon and parts of Syria, killing dozens.

During a weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu said the attacks and Israel's assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed that same month in an airstrike on Beirut, were carried out "despite the opposition" of some Israeli officials,

Netanyahu's comments came after he fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday, the culmination of long-simmering disagreements between the two about how Israel should carry out wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Netanyahu said a "crisis of trust" had developed between the two. He appointed Foreign Minister Israel Katz to take over the position.

Lebanon, Gaza and Syria hit by deadly Israeli strikes, reports say

Lebanon hit by Israeli strike

More than 80 people have been killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon, northern Gaza and Syria since late Saturday, according to reports.

The National News Agency (NNA) reported airstrikes on the town of Almat in central Lebanon on Sunday. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said 20 people were killed there, including three children. Video from the scene shows that at least one building was reduced to rubble, with heavy machinery trying to remove the debris.

The local member of parliament, Simon Abi Ramia, said: “The targeted house belongs to one of the well-known residents of the area, and it is possible that it received displaced people.”

Three people were killed in a strike on Mashghara, a town in south-central Lebanon, and an air raid was carried out on the town of Debaal in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, the agency added, while “intermittent Israeli artillery shelling continues on the town of Khiam.”

Looming Trump Presidency Set To Embolden Netanyahu And Hurt Palestinians

Yechiel LeiterIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already celebrated Donald Trump’s U.S. presidential election victory this week as “history’s greatest comeback.” And on Friday, Netanyahu signaled what he thinks Trump’s reascent to the Oval Office means for his own policies — by tapping a new ambassador to the U.S. who has roots in far-right Israeli political movements that disdain Palestinians and fuel Netanyahu’s power grabs.

Appointee Yechiel Leiter is a U.S.-born academic prominent in the Israeli settler movement — he in fact lives in one of the settlement communities, established in the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank in defiance of international law. He was previously involved in the Jewish Defense League, a violent group purporting to combat antisemitism that was founded by extremist Rabbi Meir Kahane and that the FBI deemed a terrorist organization.

James StavridisFormer North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) commander James Stavridis predicted on CNN's Smerconish on Saturday that the Russia-Ukraine war will end with Russian President Vladimir Putin taking 20 percent of Ukraine.

President-elect Donald Trump has previously said that if he were at the negotiating table with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the war between the two Eastern European nations would end "within 24 hours."

Now that Trump won this year's presidential election against Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, the world will be looking to see how he handles the war.
