• Prosecutors plan to seek nearly 17 years in prison for Jack Teixeira, the “Pentagon leaker” who used Discord to put online highly classified military documents about the war in Ukraine. The Massachusetts serviceman, 22, pleaded guilty. In a sentencing memorandum, prosecutors say he “perpetrated one of the most significant and consequential violations of the Espionage Act in American history … Teixeira violated his oath, almost every day, for over a year”.

• Teixeira’s attorneys argue that he should serve 11 years for his “terrible decision” for which he “thoroughly accepted responsibility”. Sentencing is due to take place on 12 November. The leak exposed secret assessments of Russia’s war in Ukraine, including information about troop movements and the provision of supplies and equipment to Ukrainian troops. Teixeira also admitted posting information about a US adversary’s plans to harm US forces serving overseas

Flash floods in Spain turned village streets into rivers, ruined homes, disrupted transportation and killed at least 95 people in the worst natural disaster to hit the European nation in recent memory.

Rainstorms that started Tuesday and continued Wednesday caused flooding across southern and eastern Spain, stretching from Malaga to Valencia. Muddy torrents tumbled vehicles down streets at high speeds while debris and household items swirled in the water. Police and rescue services used helicopters to lift people from their homes and rubber boats to reach drivers stranded atop cars.

Emergency services in the eastern region of Valencia confirmed a death toll of 92 people on Wednesday. Another two casualties were reported in the neighboring Castilla La Mancha region, while southern Andalusia reported one death.

• Ukraine will begin calling up another 160,000 people to serve in its military, the secretary of Ukraine’s national security council, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, has told parliament. A security source separately told Agence France-Presse the recruitment would take place over three months.

• Russia claimed on Tuesday to have taken full control of the mining hub of Selydove, about 18km (10 miles) south-east of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region. There was no confirmation from the Ukrainian side, but the Kyiv Independent cited analysts and experts in reporting that the capture of Selydove was “all but confirmed”. Russia also claimed to control the nearby villages of Bogoyavlenka, Girnyk and Katerynivka. Pokrovsk is a major war objective

An Israeli airstrike on a building in northern Gaza overnight killed at least 60 Palestinians and wounded more, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, in one of the deadliest attacks in weeks.

The strike hit a five-story building in the area of Beit Lahiya, where families of displaced Palestinians were taking shelter. At least 25 of those killed were children, according to health officials.

The Israeli military said it is aware of civilian deaths and is "looking into" the incident.

The attack comes as Israeli forces have hindered medical and rescue services in the area, and as Israeli parliament voted to ban the main United Nations agency that provides aid to Palestinians, UNRWA.

After swapping machetes and binoculars for computer screens and laser mapping, a team of researchers have stumbled on a lost Maya city of temple pyramids, enclosed plazas and a reservoir, all of which had been hidden for centuries by the Mexican jungle.

The discovery in the south-eastern Mexican state of Campeche came about after Luke Auld-Thomas, an anthropologist at Northern Arizona University, began wondering whether non-archaeological uses of the state-of-the-art laser mapping known as lidar could help shed light on the Maya world.

“For the longest time, our sample of the Maya civilisation was a couple of hundred square kilometres total,” Auld-Thomas said. “That sample was hard won by archaeologists who painstakingly walked over every square metre, hacking away at the vegetation with machetes, to see if they were standing on a pile of rocks that might have been someone’s home 1,500 years ago.”

Russian troops tortured Oleksii Sivak for weeks, applying electric shocks to his genitals in a freezing basement in his home city of Kherson in punishment for resisting their rule.

When Ukrainian troops freed the city in the autumn of 2022, Sivak was presented with a long list of medical specialists who could help his recovery and asked to tick the ones he needed.

Almost every part of the body and mind was covered, but there were no urologists, doctors who treat male urinary and reproductive organs.

“I asked them: ‘Am I meant to see a gynaecologist?’ I was shocked,” he said. We’ve had a war since 2014 [when Russian proxy forces occupied Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine] and no one had even thought about male victims of sexual violence.”
