Quintuplets among Gaza’s dead as Blinken visits the region to seek a cease-fire deal

Israeli strikes across Gaza killed 29 people including young quintuplets overnight and into Sunday, health officials said, as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel to try to seal a cease-fire deal that could help ease soaring regional tensions.

The U.S. and fellow mediators Egypt and Qatar have said they were closing in on a deal after two days of talks in Doha, with Israeli officials expressing cautious optimism. But Hamas in a statement Sunday accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of setting new conditions, including his refusal of a complete withdrawal of forces from Gaza.

The evolving proposal calls for a three-phase process in which Hamas would release all hostages abducted during its Oct. 7 attack, which triggered the deadliest war fought between Israelis and Palestinians. In exchange, Israel would withdraw its forces from Gaza and release Palestinian prisoners.

Russians tell BBC they are worried and angry at Ukraine incursion

For nearly a fortnight now Ukrainian forces have been seizing and occupying Russian territory.

Ukraine’s cross-border attack into Kursk region marks the first time since World War Two that a foreign army has been fighting inside Russia.

It is a dramatic and unexpected development in this war, nearly two-and-a-half years after President Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Kremlin has vowed to "force the enemy" out of Russia. President Putin hasn’t publicly used the word "invasion" to describe the Ukrainian offensive, as if to play down what is happening and avoid any sense of panic.

Alain Delon, cinematic heartthrob and one of the most beloved French actors, has died

Actor Alain Delon has died. His icy good looks established him as an postwar international celebrity who enjoyed a long commercial film career in Europe. Delon starred in more than 80 movies over six decades, including such classics as Le Samouraï and The Leopard. He was 88.

An agent for one of Delon's sons confirmed the death. His three children released a statement on Sunday to the news agency Agence France-Presse saying the actor had died peacefully at his home in Douchy, France.

Born in a wealthy Parisian suburb, Delon endured a tumultuous early life. His parents divorced when he was 4 years old. He spent his childhood shuffling between a foster family, various relatives and boarding schools, where he developed a reputation as a troublemaker and petty thief. At 17, Delon enlisted in the French navy, serving in what was then French Indochina for four years. After his service, he worked odd jobs, including as a waiter and a longshoreman, and started dating an actress — Brigitte Auber — who would be his entry into moviemaking.

Russia looked the wrong way In the hours before Ukrainian soldiers stormed across Russia's western border, there was no sign from Moscow that anything was amiss.

At midnight at the start of Aug. 6, the Russian defence ministry posted good news: more than 2,500 members of the regiment responsible for the capture of a town in eastern Ukraine would receive state awards for heroism.

Later that morning, as Ukraine began the biggest invasion of Russia since World War Two, the ministry published video showing General Valery Gerasimov, commander of the Russian war effort, visiting a different combat zone, also in Ukraine. He heard reports from commanders and set "tasks for further actions", it said.

The footage did not specify the exact time of the visit, but revealed no concerns, or knowledge, of the events unfolding in Russia's western Kursk region that threatened to upset Gerasimov's plans and shift the course of the two-and-a-half-year war.

An Israeli Airstrike Kills 18 Members Of A Family In Gaza As Mediators Hope For A Cease-Fire

18 members of one family killed by Israelis

An Israel airstrike in Gaza killed at least 18 people, all from the same family, on Saturday, hours after mediators expressed optimism for an imminent cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas after 10 months of war.

A joint statement by mediators the United States, Egypt and Qatar after two days of talks said a proposal to bridge gaps was presented and they expect to work out implementation details next week in Cairo.

The mediation efforts aim to secure the release of scores of Israeli hostages and stop the fighting that has devastated Gaza, where the death toll has surpassed 40,000 and a possible polio outbreak is feared. Talks are also meant to calm regional tensions that have threatened to explode into a wider war if Iran and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon attack Israel in retaliation for recent killings of militant leaders.

Saturday’s airstrike hit a house and adjacent warehouse sheltering displaced people at the entrance to the town of Zawaida, according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, where casualties were taken. An Associated Press reporter there counted the dead.

Ukraine incursion destroys key Russian bridge

Ukraine has destroyed a strategically important bridge over the river Seym, as it continues its incursion into Russia's Kursk region.

Russian officials have been quoted as saying the operation near the town of Glushkovo has cut off part of the local district.

The bridge was used by the Kremlin to supply its troops and its destruction could hamper their efforts.

Palestinians describe 'brutal' West Bank settler attack

Settlers attack West Bank Palestinians Muawiya Sedeh, a 38 year-old father of five was at home in the West Bank village of Jit when his house was torched by a band of Jewish settlers, some masked and wielding Molotov cocktails, who stormed in on Thursday night.

He said he escaped with his family with only minutes to spare. When he returned, he said the settlers were jeering and taunting him, saying "We will come back and kill you!" and telling him to go to Jordan or Syria.

Local people said more than 100 people took part in the attack, many wearing masks and clad in black, and appeared well-coordinated, dividing into groups armed with guns and others throwing stones and Molotov cocktails.

"I was lucky, it was a matter of minutes between life and death," Sedeh said.

Video shared on social media showed cars and houses ablaze and Palestinian emergency services reported that a 22-year-old man was killed by gunfire from the settlers.The Jit attack was larger than recent raids by West Bank settlers but was hardly unique, with violence against Palestinian villages already on the rise as settlement building has spread unchecked across the West Bank.
