Trump considers ex-intelligence chief Richard Grenell for Ukraine post, sources say

Grennell gets Ukranian post

Trump could ultimately decide not to create a special envoy for the conflict in Ukraine, although he is strongly considering doing so, the sources said. If he does, he could ultimately select someone else for the role, and there is no guarantee Grenell would accept.

Trump vowed on the campaign trail to swiftly end the conflict, although he has not said how he will do it.

Some of Grenell's stances could give Ukraine's leaders pause.

During a Bloomberg roundtable in July, he advocated for the creation of "autonomous zones" as a means of settling the conflict, which began after Russia invaded Ukrainian sovereign territory. He also suggested he would not be in favor of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the immediate future, a position he shares with many Trump allies.

Grenell's supporters note he has had a long diplomatic career and has a deep knowledge of European affairs. In addition to serving as ambassador to Germany, Grenell was also a special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations.

Unidentified drones spotted over three UK airbases, US air force confirms

Drones over 3 UK air bases

A number of unidentified drones have been spotted over three airbases in Britain, the US air force has confirmed.

“Small unmanned aerial systems” were seen between 20 and 22 November over RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk.

The USAF, which uses the bases, said it was unclear at this stage whether the drones should be considered hostile.

It also declined to comment on whether any defence mechanisms were used, but said it retains “the right to protect” installations.

A spokesperson for US air forces in Europe said: “We can confirm that small unmanned aerial systems [UASs] were spotted in the vicinity of and over RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell between 20 and 22 November. The number of UASs fluctuated and they ranged in size [and] configuration.

Fires, first aid and guns: meet the Finnish women training for war with Russia

Finnish women training for warIt is Friday night on a forested military base in western Finland. A group of women dressed in camouflage with matching purple beanie hats are sat in a dark tent discussing how their perspectives have changed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“I didn’t think it was a real threat that Russia would attack us,” says Sari, 42, who works in sales and lives in a nearby town. But then, she adds: “They attacked Ukraine. I saw that it is possible that we are next.”

The mother of two, who describes herself as a “realist”, was moved to join this weekend-long “surviving without electricity” course by her patriotic values, but she also wants to be more prepared with practical skills for day-to-day life. She is one of about 75 women taking part.

Hamas says Israeli female hostage killed in north Gaza combat zone

Hostage dead in Gaza

Hamas’s armed wing said on Saturday that an Israeli woman taken hostage during the October 2023 attack had been killed in a combat zone in northern Gaza, as the Israeli military said it was investigating.

The spokesperson for Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida, said contact had been restored with the woman’s captors after a break of several weeks and it was established that the hostage had been killed in an area of north Gaza where the Israeli army has been operating.

Abu Obeida’s statement did not further identify the hostage or say how or when she was killed.

The Israeli army told AFP it was looking into the claim.

Abu Obeida said that the woman had been held with a second female hostage whose life was in danger.

Troops smuggled settler leader into Gaza to survey settlement options – report

Settlement leader smiggled into Gaza

Israeli soldiers in Gaza went over their superiors’ heads earlier last week to help a settler leader enter the Strip to survey sites for potential Jewish settlements, Hebrew media reported, as the army probed the death in combat of 71-year-old amateur archaeologist who was apparently allowed into southern Lebanon without the necessary authorization.

According to a report Thursday by the Kan public broadcaster, Daniella Weiss, who is leading efforts to resettle northern Gaza, toured the Israeli side of the Gaza border fence with colleagues on November 13. The group eventually traversed the border, through unclear means, going a short way into the Strip.

The week of rising stakes in the Ukraine war

Ukraine hit by missile

The stakes have never been higher in the Ukraine-Russia war.

In the week that saw the conflict pass its 1000th day, Western powers substantially boosted Ukraine's military arsenal - and the Kremlin made its loudest threats yet of a nuclear strike.

Here is how the last week played out - and what it means.

Late on Sunday night, reports emerged that outgoing US President Joe Biden had given Ukraine permission to use longer-range ATACMS missiles to strike targets inside Russia.

Israel stands by as aid convoys come under attack in Gaza

Palestinians line up for breadFor the past year, hungry Gazans have waited in desperation for more food to enter the besieged territory from Israel. After aid trucks have been allowed in, there have been episodes of looting.

But now, armed criminal gangs are intercepting entire convoys.

Truck driver Abu Ahmad was in the worst incident so far when more than 100 trucks were attacked on Saturday. The gangs shot through the windows of his truck, he told CBS News, saying they would kill any driver who didn't stop.

Ahmad said Israeli tanks were nearby and an Israeli drone watched the entire attack unfold.

However, Israel's military says it is not responsible for protecting the aid convoys, a premise with which former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert disagrees.

TVNL Comment:  This is one of the many charges against Netanyahu and Gallant by the ICC. Starvtion cannot by weaponized.  Israelis stand by and watch the gangs stopping aid to hungry children.  What an ongoing horror.

"The Israeli government doesn't want it to happen. They want to punish the Palestinians, because the basic premise is that all of the Palestinians in Gaza support the terrorists and therefore they all should be punished," Olmert told CBS News, adding that if the Israeli army is able to build roads in Gaza, it should be "capable of making the necessary logistical arrangements" to provide humanitarian support for the people that live there.

Humanitarian Aid Efforts At Erez West Crossing

On Thursday, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Mohammed Deif, a Hamas leader who Israel claims was killed in a July airstrike. The charges included "crimes against humanity" and using "starvation as a method of warfare."

Netanyahu called the allegations "antisemitic," and the White House said it "fundamentally rejected" the decision.

Already, the poorest Gazans scavenge for food in garbage dumps as pitifully little aid gets across the Israeli border. Much of what does make it into Gaza is being stolen at gunpoint, exacerbating the territory's humanitarian crisis.

It's clear who needs to solve it, according to Juliette Touma, a spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in Gaza.

"It is up to the state of Israel to ensure that aid reaches people in need," Touma said. "They are the occupying power."

Local Gaza police used to protect the convoys in Gaza, but since February Israeli soldiers have been targeting them, accusing them of links with Hamas.

Meanwhile, almost two million Gazans are struggling to survive.

"But to want to starve them, hundreds of thousands of people, to prevent them getting the food, the water which they need for survival, is atrocious, unacceptable and I think that the Israeli government is creating something that may be come back to haunt us in a very, very painful way," Olmert said.
