Defiant Netanyahu insists Israel must control strategic border corridor in Gaza

NetanyahuBenjamin Netanyahu has defied protests at home and criticism from Joe Biden by vowing that Israel would not relinquish control over a strategic corridor along the Gaza-Egyptian border.

In a combative press conference, the Israeli prime minister presented control of the Philadelphi corridor along Gaza’s border with Egypt as a primary war aim, entrenching a position that has emerged as a key obstacle to a ceasefire deal.

“Israel will not accept the massacre of six hostages, Hamas will pay a heavy price,” said Netanyahu, standing in front of a wall-sized map of the Gaza Strip that included clip art of bombs and missiles crossing the border. “Iran’s axis of evil needs the Philadelphi corridors … Israel must control it.”

The remarks came hours after the US president met with his top advisers on the Gaza conflict and told reporters that he did not believe Netanyahu was doing enough to secure a ceasefire deal with Hamas.

US seizes Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's plane citing sanctions violations

Nicolas MaduroThe United States has seized a plane used by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and flown it from the Dominican Republic to Florida after determining that its purchase violated U.S. sanctions, the U.S. Justice Department said on Monday.

The seizure of the aircraft came amid continuing pressure on Maduro at home and abroad over a contested July 28 election that he claimed to have won, while the opposition said its vote tallies showed its candidate to have soundly defeated him.

The Venezuelan government, which confirmed Maduro had used the plane, said in an afternoon statement the seizure was "nothing but piracy", illegal and a "repeated criminal practice" by the U.S.

Maduro, his associates and the OPEC member-state's vital oil sector are under heavy U.S. sanctions, and his handling of the election has raised the prospects that further measures could be imposed.

Massive protests hit Israel after six hostages killed in Gaza

Massive protests in IsraelMassive protests swept Israel on Sunday following the death of six hostages in Gaza as frustration mounted over the failure of the country's leadership to secure a ceasefire deal that would free Israeli captives.

Crowds estimated by Israeli media to number up to 500,000 strong demonstrated in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu do more to bring home the remaining 101 hostages, about of a third of whom Israeli officials estimate have died.
In Jerusalem, protesters blocked streets and demonstrated outside the prime minister's residence. Aerial footage showed Tel Aviv's main highway filled with protesters holding flags with pictures of the slain hostages.
Israeli television footage showed police directing water canons at demonstrators who had blocked roads. Local media reported 29 arrests.

Three Israeli police killed in West Bank shooting attack

3 Israeli police killed in West BankThree Israeli police officers were killed on Sunday when their vehicle came under fire near the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, Israeli officials said, adding to days of violence in the Palestinian territory.

Following the attack in the area of the Idna Tarqumiyah Junction, security forces surrounded a house in Hebron and killed a Palestinian suspected of carrying out the shooting, the military said.

Hundreds of Israeli troops have been carrying out raids across the West Bank since last Wednesday in one of their largest actions in the area in months, which Israel says is aimed at rooting out Iranian-backed Islamist militants.

Ukrainian drone attacks hit power stations and refineries in Russia

Ukranian drones hit Russian refineries

Ukraine has carried out one of its biggest ever drone attacks on Russia, with videos showing a series of explosions and fires at power stations and refineries including in Moscow.

Russia’s defence ministry played down the overnight strikes. It said it had intercepted and destroyed 158 unmanned enemy aerial vehicles. These were shot down over 15 regions, it claimed.

The strikes came as Russia bombarded Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv and made further incremental gains in the eastern Donbas region. Its forces have been rolling forward in recent weeks and are closing in on the city of Pokrovsk.

Footage posted on Telegram channels suggested some of the long-range Ukrainian drones hit targets deep inside Russia, causing damage. At least one struck an oil refinery in the Kapotnya district in south-east Moscow.

Israel’s largest labor union announces strike to pressure government for hostage deal and cease-fire

Histadrut stikes over Gaza hostagesIsrael’s largest trade union, the Histadrut, called for a general strike to take place Monday as scores of Israelis took to the streets demanding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reach a cease-fire deal after six more hostages were found dead in Gaza.

Histadrut chief Arnon Bar-David called for the strike during a Sunday press conference, during which he said, “We must reach a deal. A deal is more important than anything else,” Reuters reported.

“We are getting body bags instead of a deal,” he said.

Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s main air transport hub, will be closed from 8 a.m. local time Monday, he said, per the news service. Municipal services in Tel Aviv will also be closed for part of Monday.

The announcement came hours after Israel’s military confirmed it recovered the bodies of six hostages in Gaza, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a native of Berkeley, Calif. The Israeli military said Sunday the six hostages were killed by Hamas shortly before forces reached them in an underground tunnel in Rafah.
