US seizes Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's plane citing sanctions violations

Nicolas MaduroThe United States has seized a plane used by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and flown it from the Dominican Republic to Florida after determining that its purchase violated U.S. sanctions, the U.S. Justice Department said on Monday.

The seizure of the aircraft came amid continuing pressure on Maduro at home and abroad over a contested July 28 election that he claimed to have won, while the opposition said its vote tallies showed its candidate to have soundly defeated him.

The Venezuelan government, which confirmed Maduro had used the plane, said in an afternoon statement the seizure was "nothing but piracy", illegal and a "repeated criminal practice" by the U.S.

Maduro, his associates and the OPEC member-state's vital oil sector are under heavy U.S. sanctions, and his handling of the election has raised the prospects that further measures could be imposed.

‘A nightmare.’ North Texas farmers say chemicals in fertilizer are killing their livestock

Forever chemicals killing livestockFamilies who built their small farms around riding their horses, raising cattle and holding family fish fries in rural Johnson County face an uncertain future because of what they’re finding in the pasture or stock tank: dead or deformed cattle, horses and fish.

The past two years have been a “nightmare” for the family farmers, and they point to “forever chemicals” found in fertilizer made from sewage as the reason.

The five farmers who live outside of Grandview — James Farmer, Robin Alessi, Patsy Schultz, and Karen and Tony Coleman — have been embroiled in a complex legal battle with the EPA and fertilizer manufacturer Synagro Technologies Inc. and its Texas subsidiary since February, when they filed a lawsuit against Synagro in Circuit Court of Baltimore County and one against the EPA in Washington.

Massive protests hit Israel after six hostages killed in Gaza

Massive protests in IsraelMassive protests swept Israel on Sunday following the death of six hostages in Gaza as frustration mounted over the failure of the country's leadership to secure a ceasefire deal that would free Israeli captives.

Crowds estimated by Israeli media to number up to 500,000 strong demonstrated in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu do more to bring home the remaining 101 hostages, about of a third of whom Israeli officials estimate have died.
In Jerusalem, protesters blocked streets and demonstrated outside the prime minister's residence. Aerial footage showed Tel Aviv's main highway filled with protesters holding flags with pictures of the slain hostages.
Israeli television footage showed police directing water canons at demonstrators who had blocked roads. Local media reported 29 arrests.

Mosquito-borne illnesses are rising: Here's how to protect yourself

Mosquito borne illnesses

Mosquitoes aren’t just a nuisance. Recent headlines remind us they can also be a serious health concern.

In New England, cases of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) — a rare but potentially deadly disease — have shut down some public parks and killed one person in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s former top infectious disease expert, is recovering from West Nile virus, another mosquito-borne disease.

Researchers say mosquito-borne illnesses are on the rise across the U.S., Central and South America and Europe, thanks to warming temperatures and other factors. And while West Nile virus remains the most common in the U.S., many other mosquito-borne illnesses – including Zika, malaria and dengue – are also a concern.

17 Guardsmen have died on Gov. Greg Abbott's controversial border mission, soldiers speak out

17 Guardsmen have died on Border duty

Orders were issued. Soldiers were told to pack up and get mission ready. They were mobilized to the U.S.-Mexico border to — they were told — deter crime.

For all of them, their lives and professions were paused. But for some of them, their sacrifices were greater than anything they could've imagined.

Gov. Greg Abbott launched Operation Lone Star (OLS) on March 6, 2021. It has been at the heart of his focus on the border, and it has received support from and praise by former President Donald Trump and other conservative leaders.

However, since OLS began, at least 17 Texas National Guardsmen have died from a multitude of causes - including a drowning in an attempt to save migrants, negligent discharge of a personally owned weapon and suicides.

Officials with the Texas Military Department (TMD) disclosed the death toll during a hearing of the Texas House Committee on Defense & Veterans' Affairs on Aug. 20.

Ukrainian drone attacks hit power stations and refineries in Russia

Ukranian drones hit Russian refineries

Ukraine has carried out one of its biggest ever drone attacks on Russia, with videos showing a series of explosions and fires at power stations and refineries including in Moscow.

Russia’s defence ministry played down the overnight strikes. It said it had intercepted and destroyed 158 unmanned enemy aerial vehicles. These were shot down over 15 regions, it claimed.

The strikes came as Russia bombarded Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv and made further incremental gains in the eastern Donbas region. Its forces have been rolling forward in recent weeks and are closing in on the city of Pokrovsk.

Footage posted on Telegram channels suggested some of the long-range Ukrainian drones hit targets deep inside Russia, causing damage. At least one struck an oil refinery in the Kapotnya district in south-east Moscow.
