Killed in her pink roller skates, a Palestinian girl’s photo in Gaza goes viral

Photo of Gazan girl killed in pink roller skates

Countless images of dead and wounded children have been pouring out of the Gaza Strip for nearly a year, laying bare the toll of a war that’s killed tens of thousands of people.

This week, though, one photo stood out: It shows the body of a young girl covered in a white shroud, wearing pink roller skates. It’s been widely shared on social media, quickling becoming another defining image of the war in Gaza — a place UNICEF has called “a graveyard for children.”

Gaza’s Health Ministry says more than 40,000 people have been killed by Israeli fire in the war, a third of them children.

Ten-year-old Tala Abu Ajwa had managed to survive 332 days of the war, the bombardment, hunger and uncertainty. She and her family had fled on foot from one place to another eight times in the past 11 months, sometimes in the middle of the night.

TVNL Comment:  Someone has to stop the bloodthirsty Israelis.  They have a free hand to kill civilians at will. It's a slaughter.

Aryna Sabalenka beats Jessica Pegula to win her first US Open

Aryna Sabalenka wins US OpenAryna Sabalenka got past Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in a rollicking U.S. Open women’s final Saturday to win her first championship at Flushing Meadows and third Grand Slam title of her career.

Sabalenka, a 26-year-old from Belarus, adds this trophy to the two she earned at the Australian Open each of the past two seasons, also on hard courts. And the victory allowed her to leave Arthur Ashe Stadium in a far better mood than when she was the runner-up to Coco Gauff at the 2023 U.S. Open.

Pegula, a native New Yorker whose parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, was participating in a major final for the first time. She’s won 15 of her past 17 matches over the past month but both losses came against Sabalenka in tournament finals.

Judge rules Missouri ballot measure to protect abortion rights is invalid

Misssouri abortion initiative taken off ballot

A Missouri judge has ruled that a ballot measure asking voters whether abortion rights should be enshrined in the state constitution is invalid, potentially jeopardizing an election scheduled for November.

In a ruling issued on Friday, Cole county circuit judge Christopher Limbaugh said that the reproductive rights petition – also known as amendment 3 – led by Missourians for Constitutional Freedom did not comply with state law.

Abortion rights activists are hopeful an appellate court could reverse Limbaugh’s decision, but for now it remains unclear whether voters will be able to decide the issue as scheduled on 5 November, the same day as the presidential election.

According to Limbaugh, his decision came as a result of the campaign’s “failure to include any statute or provision that will be repealed, especially when many of these statues are apparent”. He went on to add: “The court must conclude that the defendant-intervenors’ initiative petition was insufficient.”

Kentucky police reported an “active shooter situation” on Saturday evening near Interstate 75 in London, Kentucky, south of Lexington, where “numerous persons” had been shot in traffic.

“Please avoid I-75 around Ext 49. Until further notice! Use alternative route do not be any where in that area,” London mayor Randall Weddle said on Facebook.

France arrests nurse who volunteered in Gaza

Imane MaarifiFrance yesterday arrested then released nurse Imane Maarifi who spent 15 days volunteering as a medic in the Gaza Strip.

Lawyer Rafik Chekkat, founder of the Islamophobia platform, said Maarifi was arrested in the morning at her home and taken into custody.

He criticised the arrest and said it took place at a time when French soldiers who fought in Gaza “enjoy total impunity.”

Thomas Portes, a lawmaker from the La France Insoumise, or France Unbowed (LFI) party, wrote that Maarifi has been released from custody.

“The search of the home in front of the family leaves no doubt about the desire to intimidate the voices that are raised to support the Palestinian people and demand an immediate ceasefire,” he wrote on X.

Maarifi attended pro-Palestinian rallies in France to share her testimony about the crippling situation in Gaza.

Transgender health care bans are sweeping across America. So are the repercussions

Transgender banThe 11th Circuit Court of Appeals recently allowed Florida’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth to go back into effect.

In a dissenting opinion, Judge Charles Wilson stated, “This matter is a medical issue, where patients are best left to make decisions alongside health professionals, with access to complete, unbiased information, as needed.”

Wilson’s words demonstrate how bans like the one in Florida not only affect transgender individuals, but also disrupt health professionals’ ability to communicate with patients about evidence-based care.

While we should not forget transgender youths and their families are the central target of these bans, the legislation also interferes with healthcare providers’ ability to do their jobs. The systemic impact of these providers’ moral distress, and the medical brain drain and burnout that follows, means that these bans affect every single person in this country seeking health care.

Israeli forces pull out of Jenin leaving a trail of destruction

Jenin destruction by IDFPalestinian residents of Jenin surveyed the destruction after Israeli forces pulled out of the city on Friday (September 6).

The nine-day raid was one of the largest in the occupied West Bank in months, involving hundreds of troops and police backed by helicopters and drones.

Streets were littered with rubble and debris and water and electricity remained cut.

Samaher Abu Nassa scoffed at the idea that the operation targeted terrorists.

"Terrorists? No, we are not terrorists, we are peaceful. They are the terrorists, killing our children."

For the past nine days, she said, they had been "living in terror and fear".

U.S. announces more aid for Ukraine at "critical moment" in war with Russia, but Zelenskyy says more is needed

Zelensky needs more armsUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rarely attends the security summits organized by his Western partners in person, but on Friday, he paid his first visit to the sprawling Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin declared in his opening remarks of the latest such meeting that "it is a critical moment" in the war ignited by Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion.

The gathering of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group comes days after Zelenskyy's nation suffered its single worst attack of the year, when two ballistic missiles slammed into a military academy in Poltava, killing dozens of people and wounding more than 170 others.

The meeting in Germany also comes on the heels of a wider, blistering Russian barrage of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine. It comes after Ukraine announced the fatal crash of an F-16 fighter jet during that barrage. And it comes one month after Ukrainian forces invaded Russia's western Kursk region, seizing hundreds of square miles of territory.
