Harris dampens hopes of break with Biden on Gaza

Kamala Hrris will continue aid to IsraelPro-Palestinian activists are growing increasingly frustrated with Vice President Harris as she remains in public lockstep with President Biden on the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, but some are holding out hope she could take a harder line on Israel if elected as president.

Harris has not indicated that she would waver in weapons sales to Israel and has not shown breaks with Biden’s handling of the war, aside from slight changes in rhetoric when addressing the human suffering in Gaza.

Activists who initially expressed some optimism about Harris are ready to treat her candidacy the same as Biden’s — with protests at campaign stops and, for some, efforts to get progressives to vote against her in November.

“To many of the activists, Harris’s talking points about maintaining more or less unconditional military support for Israel just sound like a continuation of the Biden policy and approach,” said Khaled Elgindy, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute.

ZelenskyPresident Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday that Ukraine needed "new energy", as he ordered a major government reshuffle at a crucial juncture in the war against Russia.

They included the resignations of a deputy prime minister in charge of European integration, the strategic industries minister overseeing Ukraine's arms production and two other ministers, the lawmakers said.

Legal experts want Judge Cannon removed from Trump's Mar-a-Lago documents case

Federal Courthouse in FloridaA retired federal judge is among those asking an appeals court to reassign former President Trump’s indictment on charges of mishandling classified documents case to a new judge.

In documents filed with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, two groups of legal experts and former government officials say U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon should be removed from the case.

Former federal judge Nancy Gertner and two legal scholars, Stephen Gillers and James Sample say rulings by Judge Cannon and her numerous delays have raised “well-founded concerns that she may be biased against the Government’s case and unable to manage that case impartially.” They’re seeking permission to file an amicus brief.

'Never lose courage': A Paralympian who could barely walk as a kid takes 2 track medals

Preeti Pal

India’s newest star athlete Preeti Pal hails from a farming village in Muzaffarnagar, about 80 miles outside Delhi. In a few days, she will leave the Paralympics in Paris with two medals and arrive home to a massive celebration. She’s the first Indian track and field athlete to double medal at a single Paralympic Games — a bronze in both the 100 meter and 200 meter races.

Pal was born with cerebral palsy and competes in the T35 category — which includes runners with coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis. These conditions all impact movement.

During the Paralympics, Pal’s photos went viral across social media. In many Instagram posts, she’s draped in the Indian flag looking like a hero from a comic book — a far cry from her childhood, when local villagers told her parents they’d never be able to get her married because of her disability. Pal, now 23 years old, was born with cerebral palsy and misshapen legs and feet, so she could barely walk as a child. Years of treatment, physical therapy and coaching transformed her into a track phenom.

Law enforcement had prior warning about suspect in fatal Georgia high school shooting

Ga. police warned about HS shooter

The Atlanta office of the FBI has released new details about the 14-year-old boy accused of killing two students and two teachers and injuring nine others at Apalachee High School on Wednesday in Winder, Ga.

In a post on X, the FBI said in May 2023 it received “several anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified location and time,” and that the threats contained images of guns.

The agency says the sheriff’s office identified a suspect, a 13-year-old male, and interviewed him and his father. “The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them. The subject denied making the threats online,” the post said.

The FBI said the sheriff’s office alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject, but that there was no probable cause for arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action. The agency confirmed that the then-13-year-old is the same teenager who was taken into custody after Wednesday's shooting.

Stock plunge wipes out Trump Media’s extraordinary market gains

Stock for Truth Social plunge

Donald Trump’s tiny social media empire has seen its extraordinary stock market rally wiped out by a steep sell-off.

Shares in Trump Media & Technology Group, owner of Truth Social, closed below $17 on Wednesday, reversing all their gains since the company’s rapid rise took hold in January.

The former president has been prohibited by a lock-up agreement from starting to sell shares in the firm until late September. While his majority stake in the firm is still worth some $2bn on paper, its value has fallen dramatically from $4.9bn in March.

Liz Cheney, ex-Republican Wyoming representative, endorses Kamala Harris

Liz Cheney

Liz Cheney, the Republican former representative of Wyoming, has endorsed Kamala Harris for president. The former legislator made the pronouncement on Tuesday at an event at Duke university in North Carolina. This move makes her the latest Republican to publicly say that they will not be supporting Donald Trump.

“I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Cheney, daughter of former Republican vice-president Dick Cheney, told the crowd. “And as a conservative, as somebody who believes in and cares about the constitution, I have thought deeply about this and the present danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, I am voting for Kamala Harris.”

Cheney’s announcement, which was met with cheers from the audience, puts her on the growing list of lifelong Republicans who will be voting against Trump. In March, former vice-president Mike Pence told Fox news that he will not be endorsing his former running mate in November, citing Trump’s actions on 6 January and course reversals on issues such as forcing China to sell TikTok.

Netanyahu blew up cease-fire deal by changing terms, Israeli outlet says

bibiIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu changed the terms of a U.S.-backed truce deal that was mostly in place by later adding a "clarifications'' document, an Israeli news outlet reported Tuesday.

Ynet said the talks were dramatically altered when Netanyahu presented on July 27 the document with new conditions that included a military presence at the Philadelphi corridor in southern Gaza instead of the original phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from the whole enclave.

Among the other modifications to a May 27 proposal from Israel − which Hamas surprisingly accepted for the most part − were a checkpoint requirement for unarmed residents returning home to northern Gaza, a specific list of names of hostages to be freed instead of general parameters for who was eligible, and a stipulation that Palestinian prisoners would be released abroad, not in Gaza.
