It features 38 human figures meant to tell the story of a single “doughboy” — a nickname used for American World War I soldiers — as he leaves home, witnesses death and destruction on the front lines and makes his way back.

U.S. hits Russian state media with new sanctions

US hits Russians state media with more sanctionsThe U.S. State Department announced new sanctions on Russian state media Friday, accusing a Kremlin news outlet of working hand-in-hand with the Russian military and running fundraising campaigns to pay for sniper rifles, body armor and other equipment for soldiers fighting in Ukraine.

While the outlet, RT, has previously been sanctioned for its work to spread Kremlin propaganda and disinformation, the new allegations suggest its role goes far beyond influence operations. Instead, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, RT is a key part of Russia's war machine and its efforts to undermine its democratic adversaries.

More bomb threats hit Springfield, Ohio, after Trump elevates false claims about Haitians

Fountain Square in Springfield, Ohio

Two hospitals in Springfield, Ohio, were sent into lockdown after bomb threats, police said Saturday, marking the fourth such case in as many days that appears linked to false claims circulating among the far right that Haitian immigrants there are eating domestic pets and wildlife.

Saturday’s threats came even after the woman who started the rumors acknowledged to NBC News that they were unfounded and publicly apologized.

Kettering Health Springfield was one of the medical facilities targeted, with officials later saying they found nothing suspicious during a search. Another hospital, Mercy Health’s Springfield regional medical center, received a similar threat.

A spokesperson with Mercy Health said the hospital has continued to operate and thanked Springfield police as well as hospital staff “for their swift, efficient and caring response”.

Biden and Starmer in DCBritain and the US have raised fears that Russia has shared nuclear secrets with Iran in return for Tehran supplying Moscow with ballistic missiles to bomb Ukraine.

During their summit in Washington DC on Friday, Keir Starmer and US president Joe Biden acknowledged that the two countries were tightening military cooperation at a time when Iran is in the process of enriching enough uranium to complete its long-held goal to build a nuclear bomb.

British sources indicated that concerns were aired about Iran’s trade for nuclear technology, part of a deepening alliance between Tehran and Moscow.

‘It’s the height of horror’: protests in 30 French cities in support of Gisèle Pélicot

Gisele Pelicot horror

Hundreds of protesters gathered across France on Saturday in support of Gisèle Pélicot, the woman whose husband drugged her and invited more than 80 men to rape her at their home over the course of a decade.

Feminist groups organised about 30 protests in cities including Paris and Marseille. Demonstrators also gathered in Brussels. At Place de la République in Paris, protesters held placards with messages of support for victims of sexual violence. One read: “Gisèle for all. All for Gisèle.”

The case of the 72-year-old, who was repeatedly assaulted while unconscious, shocked the world. Her husband, Dominique, 71, who has pleaded guilty, is being tried with 50 other men accused of raping her.

Gisèle Pélicot has been widely praised for her courage in saying the trial should be held in public, rather than behind closed doors.

Police officer who dragged NFL player Tyreek Hill from car had problem record

Tyreek Hill

The police officer who detained NFL player Tyreek Hill in Florida had racked up six suspensions and multiple reprimands before his encounter with the Miami Dolphins wide receiver, records from his agency show.

According to employee records reviewed by NBC, Danny Torres, the Miami-Dade police department officer who forcibly arrested and handcuffed Hill last Sunday, has a tainted disciplinary record that includes being suspended for as many as 50 days between 2014 and 2019.

Two of the suspensions were for five days each in February 2014 and February 2016 – as well as a pair of five-day suspensions in September 2016. Torres also had a 20-day suspension in October 2018 and a 10-day suspension in June 2019.

Pennsylvania court reverses ruling allowing misdated mail-in ballots

Pa. judge allpws misdated ballots

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled on Friday that mail-in ballots with incorrect dates will not be counted in November, reversing a previous ruling from a lower court in the battleground state.

The decision from last month named only Philadelphia and Allegheny Counties, which the state’s Supreme Court argued the lower ruling lacked jurisdiction.

“HUGE election integrity win in Pennsylvania,” GOP Chairman Michael Whatley said in a post on X.

The court’s reversal is a win for the Republicans, but received some backlash from the state’s American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which labeled misdated ballots a “common trivial error on the external envelopes” in a press release on Friday.

“Today’s procedural ruling is a setback for Pennsylvania voters, but we will keep fighting for them. These eligible voters who got their ballots in on time should have their votes counted and voices heard,” said ACLU of Pennsylvania attorney Steve Loney in a statement. “The fundamental right to vote is among the most precious rights we enjoy as Pennsylvanians, and it should take more than a trivial paperwork error to take it away.”

Rafah a ghost town as Israeli military claims victory in Gaza’s southernmost city

Rafah a ghost townIt was once home to an estimated 1.4 million people, over half of the population of Gaza, many of them displaced from the north of the enclave after Israel launched its military offensive following Hamas' Oct. 7 terror attacks.

Today, Rafah is uninhabitable, its buildings crumbled and blackened. Mounds of concrete and bent metal are all that remain. The destruction is absolute.

When NBC News was invited into Gaza's southernmost city by the Israel Defense Forces on Friday, there were no civilians to be seen, just a few cats. Sporadic gunfire and the odd drone overhead punctuated the eery silence.
