Washington Post cartoonist resigns over paper’s refusal to publish cartoon critical of Jeff Bezos

WP cartoonist resigns

The Washington Post’s Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes has resigned from her position at the newspaper after its refusal to publish a satirical cartoon depicting the outlet’s owner, Jeff Bezos – along with other media and technology barons – kneeling before Donald Trump as he gears up for his second US presidency.

“I have had editorial feedback and productive conversations – and some differences – about cartoons I have submitted for publication, but in all that time I’ve never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at,” Telnaes wrote on Friday in an online post on the Substack platform detailing her decision to quit. “Until now.”

In a statement reported by the New York Times, the Post’s opinions editor, David Shipley, defended the newspaper’s decision against publishing Telnaes’s cartoon, saying he disagreed with her “interpretation of events” and that “the only bias was against repetition”.

Federal appeals court strikes down Biden net neutrality rules

Net neutralityA federal appeals court ruled this week the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) lacked the authority to restore certain net neutrality rules last year, handing a blow to FCC Democrats and Biden administration officials who pushed for revived open internet measures.

The Thursday ruling by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals overturns last year’s FCC vote, which reinstated the net neutrality rules barring broadband providers from blocking or throttling internet traffic to some websites and speeding up access to others that pay extra fees.

Aaron Brown, CNN Anchor Lauded For 9/11 Coverage, Dies At 76

Aaron BrownAward-winning CNN anchor Aaron Brown has died at age 76.

Brown died Sunday, according to his family, the news network announced on Tuesday.

The broadcast journalist won widespread acclaim for his coverage of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City ― his very first on-air appearance for CNN. Brown had not initially been slated to go on air but got pulled in amid the frenzy of breaking news, reporting from the roof of the network’s office in Manhattan, the network said in its obituary.

He won the Edward R. Murrow Award for his coverage of the terrorist attacks.

Brown worked in local TV news in Seattle for more than a decade before joining ABC News as a founding anchor for its late-night “World News Now,” which began airing in 1992. He joined CNN in July 2001, a few months before the on-air appearance that would become a major part of his legacy.

Trump’s threat to defund all US public media has NPR and PBS on the back foot

Trump threatens to defend public mediaOn the campaign trail this year, Donald Trump routinely criticized US media. The president-elect called for CBS to be stripped of its broadcast license after it aired an interview with Kamala Harris, refused to participate in an interview with 60 Minutes and routinely called journalists the “enemy of the people”.

But perhaps no American media has attracted as much ire from the president-elect as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting – a non-profit corporation created by federal law in 1967 to distribute funding to public media organizations like PBS and NPR.

“NO MORE FUNDING FOR NPR, A TOTAL SCAM!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social in April. “THEY ARE A LIBERAL DISINFORMATION MACHINE. NOT ONE DOLLAR!!!”

Netanyahu to skip Auschwitz liberation event in Poland over 'ICC arrest fears'

Netanyahu to skip Auschwitz liberation event

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not attend an event marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland over fears he would be arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC), Polish media has reported.

Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, Poland's deputy foreign minister, who is organising the ceremony, told Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita that Warsaw was committed to respecting the ICC's decisions.

Last month, the Hague-based court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, the former Israeli defence minister.

The two were accused of "the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts" during Israel's ongoing war on Gaza, which began following the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October.
