White House finalizing plans to expand where Ukraine can hit inside Russia

WH to expand where Ukraine can hit Russia

The White House is finalizing a plan to ease some restrictions on how Ukraine can use U.S.-donated weapons and better protect itself from Russian missiles, according to a Western official and two other people familiar with the discussions.

The talks have been closely held among a small group of officials inside the White House, one of the people involved in the debate said. All were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the conversations.

The details of the plan are still coming together. But officials in Washington, London and Kyiv have in recent days discussed expanding the area inside Russia that Ukraine can hit with American and British-made weapons. They’ve also discussed how to prevent additional cross-border attacks by Russia, including the U.S. agreeing to allow Ukraine to use U.K. long-range missiles that contain American parts to strike inside Russia.

'The Bibi Files.' Benjamin Netanyahu fails to block documentary from screening

The Bibi FilesAn Israeli court this week rejected a request from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to block a documentary about his legal troubles from screening at a Canadian film festival.

The film, The Bibi Files, a reference to the prime minister’s nickname, contains video clips documenting Netanyahu, his wife Sara, and his son Yair, during police interrogations between 2016 and 2018 that sought to examine whether Netanyahu was involved in the corruption offenses attributed to him.

The prime minister is on trial for allegedly granting favors to media moguls in exchange for gifts and favorable media coverage. He denies wrongdoing and has called the trial, which began in 2020, a witch hunt.

The film casts a spotlight on the Israeli prime minister as he faces intense domestic and international pressure over his responsibility for the security failures leading to the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the ongoing war in Gaza.

Ukraine targets Moscow in biggest drone attack yet

Ukranian drones hit RussiaUkraine targeted the Russian capital on Tuesday in its biggest drone attack so far, killing at least one and wrecking dozens of homes in the Moscow region and forcing around 50 flights to be diverted from airports around Moscow.

Russia, the world's biggest nuclear power, said it had destroyed at least 20 Ukrainian attack drones as they swarmed over the Moscow region, which has a population of more than 21 million, and 124 more over eight other regions.
At least one person was killed near Moscow, Russian authorities said. Three of Moscow's four airports were closed for more than six hours and almost 50 flights were diverted.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the drone attack was another reminder of the real nature of Ukraine's political leadership, which he said was made up of Russia's enemies.
"There is no way that night time strikes on residential neighbourhoods can be associated with military action," said Peskov.

Loved Ones Of American Activist Killed By Israel Condemn Military Probe: 'Wholly Inadequate'

American activist killed by IDFThe loved ones of an American activist who was killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank last week have condemned the military’s claim on Tuesday that a sniper “unintentionally” shot the 26-year-old woman, saying they are “deeply offended” at such a suggestion and still want an independent probe of the incident.

The statements both from Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi’s volunteer group and her family in the U.S. came in response to the Israeli military’s preliminary investigation into itself, the results of which were released Tuesday. Israel launched the probe after eyewitness testimony, the United Nations and Turkish and Palestinian officials all said that an Israeli soldier shot the woman in the head on Friday following a weekly protest against illegal Israeli settlement expansions in Beita, a Palestinian village near the West Bank city of Nablus.

The Israeli military said that its preliminary inquiry found it is “highly likely” that Eygi was shot “indirectly and unintentionally” by Israeli fire “which was not aimed at her, but aimed at the key instigator of the riot.” The military also said it “expresses its deepest regret” for killing Eygi and “sent a request to carry out an autopsy,” adding it has launched a criminal investigation.
