US warns Russia may be ready to use new lethal missile against Ukraine again in ‘coming days’

Journalists examine Russian hypersonic missile fragmentsRussia could launch its lethal new intermediate-range ballistic missile against Ukraine again soon, the Pentagon said Wednesday, as both sides wrestle for a battlefield advantage that will give them leverage in any negotiations to end the nearly 3-year war.

Sabrina Singh, Pentagon spokeswoman, told reporters in a briefing that an attack could be carried out “in the coming days.” She added that the U.S. does not consider this missile — called the Oreshnik — a game changer on the battlefield, but that the Russians are “trying to use every weapon that they have in their arsenal to intimidate Ukraine.”

She said the U.S. is basing its warning on a new intelligence assessment, but she couldn’t provide any other details, including where Russia may strike.

U.S. officials said earlier Wednesday that the U.S. was seeing the Russians make preparations for another launch of the missile, which was used for the first time last month. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive information.

US gives $20bn to Ukraine funded by seized Russian assets

US gives Ukraine 20B dollars

The US has given $20bn (£15bn) to Ukraine, funded by the profits of seized Russian assets.

The economic support forms a significant part of a $50bn (£39bn) package agreed by G7 member nations announced in June.

Funding the aid through frozen assets means Russia has to "bear the costs of its illegal war, instead of taxpayers," US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.

It comes a matter of weeks before US President Joe Biden is replaced by Donald Trump, who has said he wants to end the war in Ukraine quickly upon taking office.

Syrian activist whose suffering became symbol of Assad brutality found dead in Sednaya prison

 Mazen al-Hamada

When he spoke to lawmakers and in lecture theatres around the world, Mazen al-Hamada’s face told the story of brutal torture by Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The discovery of the Syrian activist’s body inside the notorious Sednaya prison on the outskirts of Damascus brought the news that he never lived to see its downfall.

Hamada’s sunken eyes and haunted face, his tears as he described the depth of horrors he experienced, made him a symbol of the crimes the Assad regime committed against those who spoke out against it.

Key US unit fighting disinformation abroad in jeopardy ahead of Trump return

Global Engagement Center not renewed

The Global Engagement Center (GEC), a state department unit critical to combating foreign disinformation, will not receive a multi-year extension in the latest National Defense Authorization Act, putting its future operations in jeopardy.

The next chapter of the GEC – which only addresses foreign influence operations outside the United States – now relies on Congress to come up with an extension some other way by 24 December, or the United States faces a potential gap in their international disinformation response capabilities.

In response to the NDAA snub over the weekend, a state department spokesperson told the Guardian: “As our adversaries continue to ramp up their efforts globally, it’s counterintuitive – and dangerous – to weaken or worse yet dismantle, the US’s leadership in this critical mission.”

Pope Francis on Saturday attended the inauguration of a seasonal nativity scene, presented by Palestinian officials, that featured a baby Jesus lying on a keffiyeh, the traditional scarf used by Palestinians as a national symbol.

Speaking at the event, a wheelchair-bound Francis called on believers to “remember the brothers and sisters, who, right there [in Bethlehem] and in other parts of the world, are suffering from the tragedy of war,” adding, “enough war, enough violence!” and lamenting the existence of the commercial arms trade.

Ukraine has lost 43K soldiers since start of Russian war, Zelensky says in rare update

Ukraine has lost 37K soldiersAbout 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died defending their homeland from invading Russian armies in the three years since dictator Vladimir Putin launched the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said in a rare casualty update.

That tally — which is about 15,000 less than what the US lost during eight years of fighting in Vietnam — doesn’t count the wounded, which Zelensky said has eclipsed about 370,000, according to The Independent.

Some of those soldiers were wounded more than once, and some of the injuries were minor. But the casualty list is still shocking in an era when full-scale ground wars are relatively rare.
