Gena Rowlands, Hollywood legend and 'The Notebook' actor, dies at 94

Gena Rowlands dies at 94

Gena Rowlands, one of the last of Hollywood’s living legends, has died at age 94.

A representative for her son, director Nick Cassavetes, confirmed Rowlands' death to USA TODAY Wednesday. No further details were given.

TMZ was first to report the news. According to TMZ, Rowlands died surrounded by family members at her home in Indian Wells, California.

She is survived by her actor-director children, Nick, Alexandra and Zoe Cassavetes. For decades, Rowlands was married to the late director and independent film pioneer John Cassavetes.

In June, Nick shared with Entertainment Weekly that his mom is suffering from dementia, much like her character in the 2004 drama "The Notebook." Rowland played an older version of Rachel McAdams' character, Allie, in the beloved romance movie, which co-starred Ryan Gosling.

Child rapist ex-cop’s 10-weekend US jail sentence called ‘epitome of injustice’

Ex-cop child rapist gets weekendsd in jailIt “is the epitome of injustice” as well as “dangerous” for a judge to have given a sentence of 10 weekends in jail to a former upstate New York police officer who pleaded guilty to raping a 13-year-old girl before his forced resignation, according to a prominent advocate for child sexual abuse survivors.

“This sentence is the epitome of injustice and a dangerous nod to child sexual predators letting them know, ‘No worries, we won’t go too hard on you,’” Kathryn Robb, the national director of the Children’s Justice Campaign at the Enough Abuse organization, said on Thursday. “This little girl will be imprisoned by her memories for life, while [the rapist] loses a mere 20 days of his liberty.”

Robb, an attorney, has helped state legislatures across the US reform laws addressing child sexual abuse. She added that “rape of a child is one of the most horrendous crimes with lifelong effects on the victim”. And she maintained that the case centering on ex-Rochester, New York, police officer Shawn Jordan was unconscionable for anyone who believed in the ongoing need for stiffer criminal punishments and more substantial civil damages in instances of child molestation.

Guilty verdict for white Florida woman who fatally shot Black mother

white woman guilty of killing black mother of 4

A jury on Friday convicted a white Florida woman for shooting and killing a Black mother of four through her front door in a case that provoked outrage from civil rights advocates and the victim’s family.

Susan Lorincz denied the manslaughter of Ajike “AJ” Owens, who came to her house to remonstrate after the defendant assaulted two of Owens’ children on 2 June last year. Lorincz could receive a prison sentence of up to 30 years in prison at a hearing on a date to be determined.

Pamela Dias, mother of the 35-year-old victim, became emotional as the verdict was read after two and a half hours of deliberations.

“Oh God, thank you,” she said before leaving the courtroom.

The weeklong trial before an all-white jury in Marion county heard there was a history of conflict between Owens and Lorincz, whom neighbors said previously yelled racist slurs at Owens’ children, and struck one of them with a hurled roller skate on the day of the killing.

4 ex-law enforcement officers charged in $37 million extortion scheme

Extortion scheme by law enforcement officers

Prosecutors are accusing four ex-law enforcement and military officers of conducting an elaborate, fake raid on a California man's home in 2019 in order to trick him into signing away his rights in a business worth tens of millions of dollars.

The victim, who was not named in the indictment, shared the business, a China-based rubber chemical manufacturer called Jiangsu Sinorgchem Technology Co. Ltd., with a “wealthy Chinese national," prosecutors said. The two had been in a costly legal dispute over the company for years. That same unnamed Chinese national that backed the sham raid and contacted one of the defendants, Max Samuel Bennett Turbett, with a plan to end the fight over the business, prosecutors alleged.

Turbett, 39, a U.K. citizen and former member of the British military along with three other men are now facing charges of conspiracy to commit extortion, one count of attempted extortion, one count of conspiracy against rights and one count of deprivation of rights under color of law.

Columbia University president resigns after Gaza protests turmoil

Columbia U president resigns

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik has resigned from her position, four months after the institution was rocked by campus protests over the war in Gaza.

Dr Shafik's resignation comes only a year after she took the position at the private Ivy League university in New York City, and just a few weeks before the autumn semester is due to begin.

Dr Shafik is now the third president of an Ivy League university to resign over her handling of Gaza war protests.

In April, Dr Shafik authorised New York Police Department officers to swarm the campus, a controversial decision that led to the arrests of about 100 students who were occupying a university building.
