Four San Diego fraternity members charged after setting member on fire

4 Frat members charged

Four fraternity members at San Diego State University are facing felony charges in connection with a skit performed at a party last year during which a pledge was set on fire, causing third-degree burns that covered more than 16% of his body, prosecutors said.

Caden Cooper, 22; Lucas Cowling, 20; Christopher Serrano, 20; and Lars Larsen, 19, were all charged with at least one felony Monday in San Diego superior court. All pleaded not guilty.

The four included active members and pledges of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. The fraternity did not immediately respond to an email from the Associated Press requesting to speak to them. A voicemail was left with attorney Michael Malowney, who is representing Cooper, asking for comment. A similar message was left with the office of Jay Temple, who is representing Cowling. Serrano and Larsen are being represented by unnamed public defenders.e...

Louisiana mayor arrested in connection with drug-trafficking investigation

Tyrin Truong

One of the US’s youngest municipal mayors was arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with a drug-trafficking investigation by authorities in his home state of Louisiana.

The charges against Tyrin Truong, who was 23 when he was elected mayor of the city of Bogalusa in 2022, include engaging in transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses and the illicit solicitation of sex work.

Truong is among seven defendants charged in the investigation conducted by Louisiana state police and the Bogalusa police department beginning in April 2024.

According to a statement from the state police, investigators allege that Truong and the others collectively used “social media platforms to distribute [drugs illegally] and manage payments” for them, “further expanding their reach and criminal activity”.

Key Oath Keepers leader revealed as former Las Vegas police detective

Oath Keepers leader was police detective

The man in control of the Utah-based rightwing militia Oath Keepers USA, a recent spinoff of the national organization first established by Stewart Rhodes in 2009, is a former Las Vegas metropolitan police department (LVMPD) homicide detective who left the force in acrimony after advocating “race war”.

The revelations about Robert “Bobby” Kinch, now of Duck Creek, Utah, come from public records, online materials and the work of a longtime infiltrator of the patriot movement in the Pacific north-west, who provided vital evidence to the Guardian captured inside Kinch’s home.

The findings show that four years on from January 6, the Oath Keepers, who played a central role in fomenting that day’s insurrection in Washington, have not disappeared but have continued quietly adding law-enforcement officers to their ranks.

California police force whose officers shared racist texts agrees to reform deal

Ca police force agrees to reform

A San Francisco Bay area police department mired in scandal over racist and sexist texts implicating dozens of officers has agreed to reforms and five years of outside monitoring, the US Department of Justice announced.

According to the agreement made public on Friday, the Antioch police department and the city of Antioch will select an expert law enforcement consultant approved by the justice department to review and update its practices on nondiscriminatory policing, use of force, hiring and promotions and discipline, among other topics, over a five-year period.

“Law enforcement is only effective when it inspires public confidence,” said Ismail J Ramsey, US attorney for the northern district of California.

The text messages, swapped among members of the Antioch police department between 2019 and 2022, surfaced in 2023 as part of a federal investigation of the department.

NYC congestion pricing expected to start Sunday over NJ's objections

NYC congestion pricing to start

Congestion pricing is expected to go into effect Sunday because of a federal judge’s ruling rejecting a last-minute challenge brought by the state of New Jersey.

The decision Friday evening by U.S. Senior Judge Leo Gordon clears the way for the MTA to begin charging the toll as scheduled on Sunday, the culmination of a years-long planning process for a program designed to decrease traffic in Midtown and Lower Manhattan while raising billions of dollars for the MTA.

“In a nutshell, denied,” Gordon said, rejecting New Jersey’s arguments for a delay of the tolls.

Days-long funeral procession for Jimmy Carter begins in south Georgia

Jimmy Carter procession

Jimmy Carter’s long public goodbye began on Saturday in south Georgia, where the 39th US president’s life began more than 100 years ago.

A motorcade with Carter’s flag-draped casket is heading to his hometown of Plains and past his boyhood home on the way to Atlanta. The procession began at the Phoebe Sumter medical center in Americus, where former Secret Service agents who had protected the late president served as pallbearers. A mournful train whistle filled the clear air as the pallbearers turned to face the hearse for a final goodbye, their hands on their hearts.

The Carter family, including the former president’s four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are accompanying their patriarch as his six-day state funeral begins.

The longest-lived US president, Carter died at his home in Plains on 29 December at the age of 100.

Teenage boy rescued after falling into abandoned missile silo in Colorado

Teen rescued from silo

Firefighters rescued a teenage boy after he fell into an abandoned missile silo in Colorado, authorities said.

On Wednesday, crews from multiple fire stations in Arapahoe county worked to rescue the teenager who accidentally fell approximately 40 to 50 feet into the silo shortly before 4pm, local outlets reported.

In a statement to 9News, Brian Willie, a spokesperson for South Metro Fire Rescue, said two teenagers and an adult were on top of the silo when one of the teenagers fell in. According to SMFR, the teenager fell into water but was not completely submerged because of its shallow depth.

On a post on Facebook, Sable Altura Fire Rescue, which assisted with the rescue mission, said the silo was believed to be an exhaust vent tunnel of a decommissioned Titan missile facility.
