A firefighter is dead and two others suffered serious injuries fighting a massive blaze in southern New York on Wednesday night.

The fire broke in the city of Binghamton in Broom County just north of the Pennsylvania state line.

The identity of the firefighter killed had not been released as of Thursday morning.

Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham released a statement Thursday morning saying the firefighter was injured while battling a fire in the area of 1 Main St. downtown.

The firefighter was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Kraham said. Two other Binghamton firefighters were injured battling the flames.

They were are being treated at Wilson Medical Center and are currently in stable condition.

The family of Sonya Massey and officials from Sangamon county, Illinois, reached a settlement in which the Illinois county agreed to pay Massey’s family $10m.

The settlement comes nearly a year after Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman and mother of two, was shot and killed in her home by a sheriff’s deputy who was responding to her call for help.

The settlement will probably help avoid a lawsuit over the shooting by Sean Grayson, a former deputy. Grayson, 30, is charged with first-degree murder in Massey’s death.

Federal investigators were working Tuesday to find out what led a pair of private jets to collide on a runway at a small airport in Scottsdale, Arizona, killing one person and injuring several others.

The crash occurred Monday afternoon when a Learjet owned by Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil veered off the runway at Scottsdale Airport and hit a parked Gulfstream jet, officials said, adding that it appears the plane's landing gear had failed. No official cause of the crash has been announced.

One person was found dead when first responders arrived, said Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio at a news conference on Monday. Two people were taken to nearby trauma centers in critical condition. Another person was taken to a hospital in stable condition and a fourth person refused medical treatment, he said.

Prosecutors began their case against Hadi Matar, the man accused of attacking the author Salman Rushdie, with a vivid and gruesome description of the stabbing they said came perilously close to killing him.

Matar, a 27-year-old Lebanese American, is charged with attempted murder and assault over the stabbing attack on the author on stage at an arts festival in August 2022. The 77-year-old Rushdie was grievously injured in the attack and lost sight in one eye.

In opening statements on Monday, the prosecutor Jason Schmidt told jurors in Chautauqua county court that Matar, from Fairview, New Jersey, had “come dangerously close to committing murder” when he assaulted Rushdie with a knife.

A top Department of Justice (DOJ) official ordered federal prosecutors to dismiss corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), who had cozied up with President Trump in recent months as his bribery trial set for April neared.

In a short memo, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove said the DOJ reached the decision to dismiss the counts without assessing the strength of the case and indicated that the attorneys who filed the charges did nothing wrong.

However, Bove said the case “improperly interfered” with Adams’s 2025 mayoral campaign and alluded to the Trump administration’s efforts to end “weaponization” in the federal government as a reason to wind down the case.

David Schwimmer, a star on the sitcom ‘Friends,’ called on billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk to take Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, off of Musk’s X social media platform.

In an Instagram post Saturday night, Schwimmer posted a few of the antisemitic posts that Ye wrote on X on Friday, including, “Im a Nazi”; “I don’t like or trust no Jewish person and this is completely sober with no Hennessy”; “I love Hitler Now what b——“; “I’m never apologizing for my Jewish comments.”

“We can’t stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk,” Schwimmer wrote in his caption.
