South Carolina implements one of US’s most restrictive public school book bans

S CArolia Education leader bans most books

South Carolina has implemented one of the most restrictive book ban laws in the US, enabling mass censorship in school classrooms and libraries across the state.

Drafted by Ellen Weaver, the superintendent of education and close ally of the far-right group Moms for Liberty, the law requires all reading material to be “age or developmentally appropriate”. The vague wording of the legislation – open to interpretation and deliberately inviting challenge – could see titles as classic as Romeo and Juliet completely wiped from school shelves.

“All we’re going to have left is Lassie from here on out,” said Shanna Miles, an author and school librarian born and raised in South Carolina. “They’re not going to stop at one aspect of society they don’t like; they will keep on going. Now [that] they have a taste of power, this is never going to end.”

TVNL Comment:  Scary. Just plain Scary.

Kentucky judge throws out Jewish mothers' lawsuit challenging the state's abortion ban

Kentucky courthouse

A Kentucky judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by three Jewish mothers who argued that the state's near-total abortion ban violated the religious freedoms of those who believe life begins at birth, not conception.

On Friday evening, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Brian Edwards said the group of women lacked standing to bring the case and sided with the state's attorney general, who defended the state's abortion laws.

In Kentucky, abortions are banned in almost all circumstances except in cases when a pregnant woman's life is in imminent danger of death or permanent injury.

The plaintiffs — Lisa Sobel, Jessica Kalb and Sarah Baron — filed a suit in 2022 on the grounds that the state's ban not only endangered their health but was at odds with their Jewish faith.

The suit largely centered around in-vitro fertilization (IVF), and whether it would be illegal for women in Kentucky to discard embryos created by IVF that were not yet implanted.

TVNL Comment:  This is one of many decisions that will lead to a White Christian America for White Christians only.

Four dead, nine injured as car crashes into nail salpnA minivan slammed into a Long Island, New York, nail salon on Friday, killing four people and injuring nine others inside the business at the time, a Suffolk county fire official said.

“There were people trapped,” Dominic Albanese of the Deer Park fire department told reporters at the scene. “We extricated them and transported them to area hospitals.”

CODEPINK Statement Regarding Adas Torah “Anglo” Real Estate Sale Protest

Code Pink protests land sale of Palestinian propertyOver the weekend, a protest was held against the illegal sale of stolen land in Palestine. The so-called “mega event” promised to help people move to “the best Anglo neighborhoods in Israel” was held at Adas Torah Synagogue in Los Angeles. The illegal land sale was advertised in the Jewish Journal.

No religious services were scheduled at the time of the real estate sale and the counter-protest. Contrary to what the media is falsely reporting, the entrance was never blocked by anyone.

It is outrageous that President Biden and certain media outlets have misrepresented this protest as an anti-Semitic attack on worshippers. President Biden went as far as to say it was “un-American.” Is Biden saying that using a place of worship to sell “Anglo neighborhoods” on stolen land illegally is an American value?

This mischaracterization by President Biden is outrageous and has real consequences, as seen recently when two Palestinian-American children were nearly murdered in Texas, likely influenced by such inflammatory rhetoric. President Biden has not commented on this crime.

US admits dams in Pacific north-west have devastated Native Americans

Dams hurt Native AmericansThe US government, in a report published on Tuesday, acknowledged for the first time the harms that federal dams have inflicted on Native American tribes in the US Pacific north-west.

The report by the interior department details the “historic, ongoing and cumulative impacts of federal Columbia River dams on Columbia River Basin Tribes”, including how dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers have devastated salmon runs, inundated villages and burial grounds, and deprived tribal members of the ability to exercise traditional ways of life.

The Columbia River basin, an area roughly the size of Texas, historically supported abundant wild salmon, which play an important role in tribal identity and spirituality, as well as steelhead and native resident fish.

The construction of large hydroelectric dams throughout the basin at the turn of the 20th century impeded fish migration and flooded entire villages and towns, forcing people to relocate and transforming the ecosystem.

A judge orders Alex Jones to sell personal assets, but Infowars can continue for now

Alex Jones keeps Infowars

Friday was a day of reckoning for Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and a long-awaited culmination for the Sandy Hook families who sued Jones for defamation. A federal bankruptcy judge in Texas has decided that Jones must sell off his personal assets through a Chapter 7 liquidation in order to pay families nearly $1.5 billion in damages for spreading lies that the 2012 school shooting never happened.

A trustee was appointed Friday afternoon to take over control of Jones’ personal estate. Liquidation means Jones' personal belongings — from his gun collection to his jewelry — will be auctioned to the highest bidder in something of a fire sale. He could even lose access to his account on X, where he currently has 2.3 million followers. However, Texas law allows him to keep his home, which is worth more than $2 million.

Six tribes have voted to ban Gov. Kristi Noem from their land – about 20% of South Dakota

6 tribes ban Noem

Six of the nine Native American tribes in South Dakota have voted to ban Republican Gov. Kristi Noem from their reservations – the equivalent of 20% of the state's land mass – in opposition to her assertion that some tribal leaders are benefiting from drug cartels along with other comments.

Two groups, the Yankton Sioux Tribe in southeastern South Dakota, and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Ovate tribe in the northeast part of the state, last week became the latest to deny Noem entry.

In banning Noem, the Yankton Sioux Tribe Business and Claims Committee cited her comments about drug cartels and Native American children, who "don't have any hope" because of absentee parents.
