Virginia School Board Member Sentenced In Jan. 6 Case Says He Won't Resign

Michael Adkins

A member of a Virginia school board says he won’t resign despite being sentenced Monday to 12 days behind bars for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot in Washington, D.C.

Miles Adkins, 39, pleaded guilty to two federal misdemeanors after he was found to be among the many rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to overturn the 2020 election results and keep Donald Trump in the presidency.

While inside, Adkins “helped an individual enter the U.S. Capitol building through a broken window next to the Senate Wing Door,” according to a criminal complaint.

The Justice Department identified Adkins with the assistance of security footage from the Capitol, along with Adkins’ own social media activity.

“In a social media message, ADKINS corroborated his identity and actions inside the U.S. Capitol building by bragging that he drank a Coors Lite beer in the U.S. Capitol building,” the complaint said.

Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to re-strengthen on its way to drench Texas

Hurricane Beryl

Beryl has turned its wrath on Mexico and is headed for the Gulf of Mexico, weakened but still dangerous after tearing through a series of Caribbean islands in recent days. The tropical storm is expected to strengthen once again before targeting Texas.

The National Hurricane Center says Beryl made landfall as a Category 2 storm just east of Tulum on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula shortly after 6 a.m. ET on Friday. It weakened throughout the day, and by midafternoon it was downgraded to a tropical storm.

“Continued weakening is expected as Beryl crosses the Yucatan Peninsula today, but re-intensification is expected once the center moves back over the Gulf of Mexico,” the NHC said in its 2 p.m. ET update.

Three dead after truck strikes group on Fourth of July in New York City park

Truck crashes into crowd in NYC park

Three people were killed and at least nine others injured, four critically, when a pickup truck drove into a group celebrating the Fourth of July holiday in New York City, authorities said.

Police have identified 44-year-old Daniel Hyden, of New Jersey, as the driver behind the deadly collision. Hyden was allegedly driving a gray Ford F-150 that came down a street “at a high rate of speed” shortly before 9pm on Thursday. The truck went through an intersection and past a stop sign, drove on to the sidewalk and into Corlears Hook Park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Jeffrey Maddrey, the New York police department chief, said during a news conference.

Kansas Supreme Court Strikes Down Two Anti-Abortion Laws

Kansas Supreme CourtKansas’ highest court strongly reaffirmed Friday that the state constitution protects abortion access, striking down a ban on a common second-trimester procedure and laws regulating abortion providers more strictly than other health care providers.

The pair of 5-1 decisions suggests that other restrictions — even ones decades on the books — might not withstand legal challenges. The court’s dissenting justice, widely seen as its most conservative, warned that Kansas is headed toward “a legal regime of unrestricted access to abortion.”

Wisconsin Supreme Court reinstates absentee ballot drop boxes

Wisconsin reinstates drop boxesWisconsin’s liberal-controlled Supreme Court on Friday restored the use of absentee ballot drop boxes in the swing state ahead of the upcoming elections − a reversal of a past decision from the court that could influence voter participation.

The 4-3 decision was a win for Democrats who argued the long-standing practice of allowing voters to file ballots into the secure boxes made voting more accessible. That process, however, was highly criticized in 2020 by former President Donald Trump and Republicans who claimed without evidence that the boxes and absentee voting were rife with fraud.

A newly discovered letter by Thomas Jefferson shows ‘a regular guy with financial burdens’

Jefferson letterHe came from one of America’s wealthiest landowning families, and was ranked the fourth richest US president in a recent study. But Thomas Jefferson, the nation’s third president, harbored a secret during his time in the White House: he was almost constantly in penury, and struggled to pay his food bills, servants and other household expenses.

The revelation comes in a previously unpublished letter that Jefferson, who was president from 1801 to 1809, wrote to a friend who acted as his financial agent in October 1802.

The document, valued at $40,000, is for sale by Pennsylvania dealer the Raab Collection to commemorate the Fourth of July holiday, also the 198th anniversary of Jefferson’s death.

That Jefferson, a founder and primary author of the Declaration of Independence, died broke is not new. Like many plantation owners of the period, he struggled to balance the books, and left a debt of $107,000 (more than $1m today) that led heirs to sell his possessions, including slaves and his beloved Monticello estate in Virginia.

Arizona proposal to protect abortion rights in state constitution advances

Arizona abortion rights move forwardA proposal to enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution of Arizona, a key battleground state in the upcoming US elections, has inched closer to becoming an official ballot measure.

On Wednesday, Arizona for Abortion Access, the coalition behind the measure, announced that it had turned in more than 800,000 signatures – more than double the needed amount to get the measure on the ballot come November.

That’s more signatures than have ever been submitted for a citizen-led ballot measure in Arizona, according to Chris Love, a spokesperson for Arizona for Abortion Access.

“It represents one in five Arizona voters,” Love said. “It’s an amazing feat for us. I think it’s a demonstration of the strength of our campaign and the excitement of Arizona voters to really settle the issue of abortion rights on the ballot in November.”
