Israel’s evacuation orders have displaced 90% of Gaza residents, UN says

Pa;estinian evacuationsSuccessive Israeli evacuation orders in Gaza, including 12 just this month, have displaced 90% of its 2.1 million residents since the Israel-Hamas war began last October, often multiple times, the top United Nations humanitarian official for the Palestinian territory says.

Muhannad Hadi said the evacuation orders are endangering civilians instead of protecting them. “They are forcing families to flee again, often under fire and with the few belongings they can carry with them, into an ever-shrinking area” that is crowded and unsafe.

Civilians are being deprived of medical care, shelter, water wells and humanitarian supplies, “running from one destroyed place to another, with no end in sight,” he said.

Hadi said in the statement Thursday that international humanitarian law requires the protection of civilians. “The way forward is as clear as it is urgent: protect civilians, release the hostages, facilitate humanitarian access, agree on a cease-fire.”

Atlanta hospital is accused of losing part of patient's skull following brain surgery

Atlanta hospital lost part of patient's skullA Georgia couple has filed a lawsuit against an Atlanta hospital after they say hospital staff allegedly misplaced part of the husband’s skull following his brain surgery.

In a lawsuit filed in a DeKalb County, Ga., court, Fernando and Maria Cluster say that staff at Emory University Hospital Midtown caused them "ongoing physical and emotional pain and suffering" and left them with thousands of dollars in medical bills.

Emory Healthcare declined to comment on the lawsuit filed by the Clusters but told NPR in a statement that the hospital system is "committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care for patients and those we serve in our communities."

The attorney representing the Clusters did not respond to NPR's immediate request for comment on the lawsuit.

Supreme Court grants GOP bid to require citizenship proof for some Arizona voters

SCOTUS alloows Arizona to require proof of citizenship of voters

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a mixed ruling on a controversial Arizona voting law.

The Republican National Committee had asked the court to put a pause on a lower court ruling against the 2022 law. And in a 5-4 decision, the high court granted part of that request, allowing Arizona to enforce — for now — a section that requires election officials to reject state voter registration forms that are submitted without an applicant’s proof of U.S. citizenship. That provision will remain in effect as an appeal proceeds.

But the court rejected other aspects of Republicans' request that could have blocked tens of thousands of currently registered voters from voting in this fall’s presidential election.

Meth worth nearly $6m found in fake watermelons at US-Mexico border

Meth found in fake watermelons

Everyday fruit and vegetables are some of the latest methods Mexican cartels are using to smuggle drugs into the US, recent seizures of methamphetamine suggest.

Around 2 tonnes of the powerful stimulant known colloquially as crystal meth was discovered recently in packages designed to look like bright green watermelons at the San Diego, California, port of Otay Mesa, according to US Customs and Border Patrol Protection officials.

Hidden amongst a shipment of actual watermelons, around 1,220 fake watermelons were found to contain 4,587lbs of meth valued at $5m after a truck driven by a 29-year-old man was selected for secondary inspection.

Port director Rosa Hernandez described the method of concealment as “sophisticated.

Muslim Women for Harris disbands and withdraws support for candidate

Muslims Women for Harris disbands

On the third night of the Democratic national convention, the group Muslim Women for Harris released a statement announcing that it was disbanding in response to the Harris-Walz campaign’s refusal to allow a Palestinian person to speak on the main stage.

The statement was released as members of the Uncommitted National Movement, which won 30 delegates to the convention, and their supporters held a sit-in outside of the convention. Ilhan Omar joined the demonstration for some time, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called in to the sit-in via FaceTime. The sit-in came after the anti-war group was told a Palestinian person would not be allowed to speak on the main stage – until then, whether or not such a speech would happen was up in the air.

During the sit-in, Muslim Women for Harris pulled their support for the Democratic nominee.

A Sikh separatist leader was attacked on a California highway earlier this month in a shooting that his organization has described as an assassination attempt.

Satinder Pal Singh Raju, an organizer with Sikhs for Justice and an advocate for the establishment of an independent Sikh state, Khalistan, was traveling on the Interstate 505 near Sacramento on 11 August when the truck he was in was “sprayed with bullets”. He survived the shooting.

Raju is an associate of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian advocate for Khalistan who was assassinated in Vancouver in 2023, according to Sikhs for Justice. The Canadian government has said there were “credible allegations” that “agents of the Indian government” were behind Nijjar’s death.

Earthquake shakes Hawaii's Big Island as storms loom in the Pacific

4.7 earthquake in HawaiiA magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Big Island of Hawaii on Thursday as officials tracked two rapidly developing storms in the Pacific.

The temblor was reported nine miles south of Fern Forest, a community of about 1,100 people on the southern end of the Big Island of Hawaii, at 12:52 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said more than 300 people reported feeling the earthquake all across the Big Island in the first hour and several reports were received from nearby islands. There were no immediate reports of significant damage and the earthquake did not raise the threat of tsunamis, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Additionally, the earthquake did not have any apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes, the U.S. Geological Survey said. In recent days, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has issued warnings about increased activity at Kilauea volcano. The volcano's last eruption occurred on July 3 and lasted a few days.
