Statue of John Lewis unveiled in Georgia to honor late civil rights leader

Statue of John Lewis in Georgia

A 12ft-tall statue of John Lewis was unveiled in Georgia on Saturday morning, honoring the legacy of the civil rights leader and congressman who died in 2020.

The statue stands in Decatur Square outside the historic Decatur courthouse in outer Atlanta, in a district Lewis represented in Congress from 1987 to his death. Lewis was 80 when he died due to complications related to pancreatic cancer.

The statue replaces a Confederate obelisk that was originally erected in 1908 and was taken down in June 2020 amid the Black Lives Matter protests that spread across the country after the murder of George Floyd.

'Can't Make This Up': Journalist Arrested Under UK Anti-Terror Law Hours After Criticizing It

Richard Medhurst

Richard Medhurst, a Syrian-British independent journalist who defends Palestinians' right to resist Israeli apartheid, occupation, and other crimes, said this week that he was recently arrested at London's Heathrow Airport and held for nearly 24 hours for allegedly running afoul of a highly controversial anti-terrorism law critics say is used to silence legitimate dissent.

Medhurst—who is known for his work opposing U.S., British, and Israeli war crimes in the Middle East and for his advocacy for formerly imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange—said on social media Tuesday: "I criticized the Terrorism Act before getting on the plane, then got arrested under the Terrorism Act upon landing. Can't make this up."

In a nearly nine-minute video posted Monday night on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, Medhurst said that "on Thursday, as I landed in London Heathrow Airport, I was immediately escorted off the plane by six police officers who were waiting for me at the entrance of the aircraft."

Freed Israeli captive Noa Argamani says she was wounded by Israel, not Hamas

Noa Argamani
Noa Argamani, an Israeli woman freed from Hamas captivity in Gaza in June, said on Friday that her injuries were caused by an Israeli air strike during her rescue operation, not by a Hamas attack.

Speaking to diplomats from G7 countries in Tokyo on Wednesday, Argamani detailed her ordeal after she was taken captive by Palestinian armed groups during the 7 October attack.

However, two days later, she issued a statement on Instagram, saying that some of her remarks had been misquoted and taken out of context.

Contrary to some Israeli media reports, Argamani clarified that she was not beaten or had her hair shaved by Palestinian fighters.

"I cannot ignore what happened here over the past 24 hours, taking my words out of context," she wrote, referring to the Israeli media coverage of her Tokyo speech.

TVNL Comment:  Has this made the mainstream media?  Think twice before believing anything said by Israeli officials.

US announces new round of military assistance for Ukraine

Ukranian soldier

The United States has announced a new round of military assistance to Ukraine, following a phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Joe Biden.

The Pentagon stated on Friday that the latest aid package would be worth $125m, and Biden said that it would include air defence munitions, ammunition and anti-armour missiles.

“Russia will not prevail in this conflict. The independent people of Ukraine will prevail – and the United States, our allies, and our partners, will continue to stand with them every step of the way,” Biden said in a statement.

The US has supplied Ukraine with tens of billions of dollars worth of military assistance since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its territory in February 2022.

In the years since, Ukrainian forces have struggled to expel Russian forces as they labour under shortages of crucial supplies, with no end to the conflict in sight.

Even if a Gaza ceasefire is agreed, Israel has made clear it reserves the right to resume the war with Hamas

Israel reserves right to continue war with Gaza

Months of feverish negotiations, in different cities and at multiple levels, have gotten Israel and Hamas closer to striking a ceasefire deal. But even if an agreement is reached – still far from certain – it could end up lasting only weeks before it collapses and the war in Gaza resumes.

As senior negotiators prepare to meet this weekend in Cairo, there are still several sticking points in the talks over the potential three-phase agreement. But Israel has made it clear that following the initial six-week phase, a break in the fighting may be just that and it is not ready to agree to a permanent ceasefire.

Judge blocks 24-hour waiting period for abortions in Ohio, citing 2023 reproductive rights amendment

Judge lifts 24 hour waiting period for abortionA county judge in Ohio temporarily blocked several state laws on Friday that combined to create a 24-hour waiting period for obtaining an abortion in the state, in the first court decision on the merits of a 2023 constitutional amendment that guarantees access to the procedure.

Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David C. Young said the language of last year’s Issue 1 was “clear and unambiguous.” He found that attorneys for Preterm-Cleveland and the other abortion clinics and physician who sued clearly showed “that the challenged statutes burden, penalize, prohibit, interfere with, and discriminate against patients in exercising their right to an abortion and providers for assisting them in exercising that right.”

The challenged rules included a 24-hour waiting period requirement, the requirement for an in-person visit and several state mandates requiring those seeking abortions to receive certain information. Young said the provisions don’t advance patient health.

Georgia election deniers helped pass new voting rules. Many worry it’ll lead to chaos in November

Georgia election changesConservative activists in Georgia have worked with prominent election deniers to pass a series of significant changes to the procedures for counting ballots in recent weeks, raising alarm about the potential for confusion and interference in the election certification process in a key swing state this fall.

Since the beginning of August, the five-member state election board has adopted rules that allow local election boards to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” into election results before they are certified, and to allow any local election board member “to examine all election related documentation created during the conduct of elections prior to certification of results”. The same rule also requires local boards to reconcile any discrepancies between the total number of ballots cast and the number of voters who check in. If it can’t reconcile the numbers, the board is authorized to come up with a way to figure out which votes count and which do not.

At its upcoming meeting in September, the board is also expected to approve a measure that would require local officials to hand-count ballots to check the machine tabulations. Experts have warned that hand-counts are unreliable, costly and time-consuming.

HuffPost: Joe Biden Appoints Hawkish Official To Lead Israel Policy At State Department

Mira ResnickThe Biden administration on Friday tapped Mira Resnick, an official deeply involved in weapons transfers to Israel, for a new role shaping policy at the State Department on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to two people familiar with the move.

The decision surprised some foreign policy professionals and was seen as particularly alarming by skeptics of President Joe Biden’s near-total backing of Israel’s devastating ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

Gaza War Critics Are Inspired By The 1964 DNC — And They're Playing The Long Game

Gaza war criticsAs the sun went down on Thursday and the sprawling stadium behind her filled with thousands of people gathered for the final night of the Democratic National Convention, Georgia state Rep. Ruwa Romman stood on a sidewalk and spoke to a few dozen supporters and journalists about her inspiration from 60 years ago.

They’ll say this is how it’s always been, that nothing can change. But remember Fannie Lou Hamer,” Roman said, referring to the civil rights activist who famously challenged the 1964 DNC. “Shunned for her courage … She paved the way for an integrated Democratic Party. Her legacy lives on, and it’s her example we follow.”

“This historic moment is full of promise, but only if we stand together. Our party’s greatest strength has always been our ability to unite,” Romman continued. “Let’s fight for the policies long overdue — from restoring access to abortions to ensuring a living wage, to demanding an end to reckless war and a cease-fire in Gaza.”
