Iraq by the numbers: key figures in the war

-Iraqi deaths in May from war-related violence:

At least 554 Iraqis were killed or found dead in June in war-related violence, according to figures compiled by The Associated Press. That was a slight increase over the May figure of 515, according to the AP tally.

-Assassinated Iraqi academics: 374.
-Journalists killed on assignment as of June 30, 2008: 129.

Prosecutors want dismissed Haditha case reinstated

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Prosecutors will ask a military appeals court to reinstate the case against the top-ranking U.S. Marine charged in the 2005 death of 24 Iraqi civilians at Haditha, a Marine spokesman said on Thursday.

A military judge dismissed all charges against Col. Jeffrey Chessani on Tuesday, ruling that a four-star general who oversaw the case was improperly influenced by an investigator.

Top Iraqi cleric warns of uprising

BAGHDAD, June 9 (UPI) -- A leading Iraqi Shiite cleric said Monday the status of forces agreement between Washington and Baghdad could lead to an uprising in Iraq.

"It is not to the benefit of the U.S. as a major power to lessen the sovereignty of Iraq. This treaty is humiliating to the Iraqi people, and might cause an uprising against it and those who support it," Grand Ayatollah Mohammad al-Modarresi told the Iranian state-run English-language service, Press TV.

British military: 3 soldiers slain in Afghanistan

LONDON - Britain's military says three soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan. The soldiers were killed by a suicide bomber while on foot patrol less than a mile from their base in Afghanistan's Upper Sangin Valley.

A fourth soldier was wounded in the attack Sunday.

Iraq lawmakers want U.S. forces out as part of deal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A majority of the Iraqi parliament has written to Congress rejecting a long-term security deal with Washington if it is not linked to a requirement that U.S. forces leave, a U.S. lawmaker said on Wednesday.

Rep. William Delahunt, a Massachusetts Democrat and Iraq war opponent, released excerpts from a letter he was handed by Iraqi parliamentarians laying down conditions for the security pact that the Bush administration seeks with Iraq.

Revealed: Secret plan to keep Iraq under US control

A secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely, regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election in November.

The terms of the impending deal, details of which have been leaked to The Independent, are likely to have an explosive political effect in Iraq. Iraqi officials fear that the accord, under which US troops would occupy permanent bases, conduct military operations, arrest Iraqis and enjoy immunity from Iraqi law, will destabilise Iraq's position in the Middle East and lay the basis for unending conflict in their country.
