Merrick Garland defends special prosecutor Jack Smith in first comments on charges

AG Garland Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday made his first public remarks after the historic indictment of former President Donald Trump on federal criminal charges.

Garland, taking questions at an event on combating violent crime, said he couldn't discuss particulars of the case but offered general praise for special counsel Jack Smith and his team after being asked about accusations made by Trump and other Republicans that the Justice Department has been "weaponized."

"As I said when I appointed Mr. Smith, I did so because it underscores the Justice Department's commitment to both independence and accountability," the attorney general said. "Mr. Smith is a veteran career prosecutor. He has assembled a group of experienced and talented prosecutors and agents who share his commitment to integrity. Any questions about this matter will have to be answered by their filings in court."

2 Active-Duty Marines Plead Guilty To Capitol Riot Charges

2 active duty marines plead guilty at Jan6 probe Two men who were active-duty members of the Marines Corps when they stormed the U.S. Capitol pleaded guilty on Monday to riot-related criminal charges.

Joshua Abate and Dodge Dale Hellonen are scheduled to be sentenced in September by U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes. Both pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Columbia.

Many Capitol rioters are military veterans, but only a few were actively serving in the armed forces when they joined a mob’s attack on Jan. 6, 2021.

A third active-duty Marine, Micah Coomer, also was charged with Abate and Hellonen. Coomer pleaded guilty to the same misdemeanor charge in May and is scheduled to be sentenced by Reyes on Aug. 30.

Trump vows revenge as he lands in Miami for arraignment on 37 federal charges

Former president Donald Trump landed in Miami today ahead of his arraignment on 37 charges over his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House.

The former president flew from Newark Liberty International Airport to Miami International Airport on Monday afternoon, to spend the night at his Mar-a-Lago estate – the Florida home where he is accused of hoarding troves of classified papers, including national defence information.

Mr Trump will then appear for his arraignment in a federal courtroom in downtown Miami on Tuesday afternoon, before flying straight back to New Jersey where he has announced plans to deliver remarks that night at his golf club.

Trump kept boxes with classified material in bathroom

Six pictures released as part of the indictment against Donald Trump show cardboard boxes of documents stacked in rooms across his Mar-a-Lago estate.

The former president allegedly put boxes of classified material in a shower, a bathroom, a ballroom and his bedroom.

The 49-page document accuses Mr Trump of illegally holding on to files with details of US nuclear weapons programmes, the potential vulnerabilities of the US and its allies and US plans for retaliatory military attacks.

Charges: High-ranking D.C. cop in cahoots with the Proud Boys!

A high-ranking lieutenant in the Washington, D.C., police department was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday morning for allegedly obstructing justice and making false statements about his relationship with Enrique Tarrio, the longtime chairman of the far-right Proud Boys.

The indictment, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, alleges that Lieutenant Shane Lamond and Tarrio exchanged hundreds of messages as Lamond helped Tarrio understand police investigations into his group, particularly around the time of the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Lamond could not immediately be reached for comment, and federal court records did not yet indicate who will represent him in court.

In an unsigned official statement, the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (MPD) said that Lamond was placed on administrative leave in February 2022 and that the department cooperated with the investigation.

New Hampshire governor ‘embarrassed’ by crowd’s behavior at Trump town hall

Sununu ashamed of NH residentss at town hall The governor of New Hampshire, Chris Sununu, said it was “embarrassing” that Republican voters from his state laughed and applauded when Donald Trump mocked E Jean Carroll during a CNN town hall this week.

Sununu may yet have to court such voters in a presidential run of his own.

Nonetheless, the governor said, the town hall audience’s behavior “doesn’t shine a positive light on New Hampshire”.

In New York on Tuesday, a jury in a civil case found Trump liable for sexual battery and defamation regarding a 1996 assault in a New York department store changing room which Carroll described in a book in 2019. The former president was ordered to pay about $5m in damages.

Regardless, at Wednesday’s CNN event in Manchester, New Hampshire, Trump said he had “no idea who the hell” Carroll was and called her a “whack job”.

Biden names Neera Tanden as his domestic policy adviser

President Joe Biden announced on Friday that Neera Tanden will serve as the next head of his domestic policy council.

Tanden, a longtime prominent Democratic operative, will replace Susan Rice, who plans to leave the administration later this month. Tanden has spent the last year-and-a-half as senior adviser and staff secretary in the White House, after her initial nomination to run the Office of Management and Budget faltered in the face of Senate opposition.

“While growing up, Neera relied on some of the critical programs that she will oversee as Domestic Policy Advisor,” Biden said in a statement announcing the move. “I know those insights will serve my Administration and the American people well.”

In addition, the White House announced that Stef Feldman, a longtime Biden aide dating back to the Obama administration, will replace Tanden in the role of staff secretary.
