Trump economic approval ratings sag as inflation fears grow

Trump pollsAccording to February Gallup polling, 42 percent of Americans are giving a thumbs up to Trump’s economic stewardship while 54 percent are giving him a thumbs down.

Approval of Trump’s handling of the economy also fell to 39 percent from 43 percent in polling released last week by Reuters/Ipsos.

This is notably a lower mark compared to the start of Trump’s first term in 2017, when his economic approval stood at 53 percent. While this could reflect less enthusiasm about the economy more generally, it is also a notable thing to watch for the president’s team.

On the economy, some polls still indicate Americans are worried about the direction.

Polling released this week by Reuters/Ipsos shows that 44 percent of Americans think the employment and jobs situation is heading in the wrong direction, compared to 33 percent who think it’s heading in the right direction.

US education department offers buyout that employees call ‘beyond misleading’

US Education Department

The US Department of Education sent an email to employees department-wide on Friday offering up to $25,000 to voluntarily resign or retire, or take severance, whichever is less.

The email, obtained by the Guardian, states “this is a one-time offer in advance of a very significant Reduction In Force for the US Department of Education” and gives employees until the end of day Monday to accept.

According to a Department of Education employee, the email was sent, retracted, then sent back out to employees.

“This is beyond manipulative and misleading,” claimed the worker, who requested to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. “Also, if you leave voluntarily, you are not eligible for unemployment.”

They noted their severance and unused leave compensation that they would receive through a reduction in force order would be several times more than the buyout offer. But with the buyout offer, they would only receive the lesser amount. They provided the Guardian a copy of their benefits, which notes their current severance amount and eligibility.

DOJ spokesperson resigns, citing ‘toxic work environment’

Joshu StueveJoshua Stueve, a top spokesperson for the Department of Justice (DOJ), has resigned, citing a “toxic work environment” in his letter to leadership.

“Simply put, I cannot continue to serve in such a hostile and toxic work environment, one where leadership at the highest levels makes clear we are not welcomed or valued, much less trusted to do our jobs,” wrote Stueve, who is not a political appointee and has served in administrations run by both parties.

Stueve’s resignation is the latest in federal resignations and firings since the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) began examining various agencies to cut spending.

DOGE, the brainchild of Elon Musk, has won unprecedented access to internal systems of the federal government since Jan. 20. It has worked to dismantle parts of the government while pushing federal workers to resign.

White House Says Trump Is Getting Back Boxes Seized By FBI

Trump wants confiscated boxes back As Trump headed to Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Friday night, boxes were spotted being loaded onto the plane.

The White House said in a statement they were the boxes seized from his Florida resort in 2022 by the FBI.

"The FBl is giving the President his property back that was taken during the unlawful and illegal raids. We are taking possession of the boxes today and loading them onto Air Force One," said Steven Cheung, White House communications director.

The FBI executed a search warrant for potentially classified material at Mar-a-Lago in August 2022, coming away with 20 boxes. The New York Times reported at the time that more than 300 classified documents kept at the resort were recovered by the government.

Trump expected to sign order designating English as the official language of the US

English will be official languagePresident Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States, according to the White House.

The order will allow government agencies and organizations that receive federal funding to choose whether to continue to offer documents and services in language other than English, according to a fact sheet about the impending order.

Trump had been expected to sign the order Friday. But by Friday night, the White House had not announced the order had been signed and did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The executive order will rescind a mandate from former President Bill Clinton that required the government and organizations that received federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.

Judge says Trump's mass firing of federal employees is illegal and should be stopped

Judge declares firings illegal

A federal judge in San Francisco says the Trump administration's firing of thousands of probationary employees is illegal and should be stopped.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup says the U.S. Office of Personnel Management must rescind directives sent to some agencies ordering them to fire their probationary employees — typically those in their first or second year in a job.

The decision came at the end of a hearing on Thursday. His order covers the Veterans Affairs Department, the National Park Service, the Small Business Administration, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and other agencies whose firings impact the civic groups that sued the Trump administration.e
