Clashes resumed in Hong Kong on Tuesday between police and anti-government protesters, some of them donned Santa Claus hats, as the more than six-month-long demonstrations look set to move into the new year.

Black-clad protesters smashed shop windows, while police responded with tear gas and the arrest of a still indeterminate number of demonstrators.

The protests demanding greater democratic rights show no sign of ending despite the overwhelming victory by anti-establishment candidates in elections for district representatives earlier this month.

Boris Johnson lost his government’s ruling majority ahead of a critical showdown with members of Britain’s Parliament, as the Brexit crisis pushed the U.K. closer toward a snap election.

Johnson is battling political opponents who are determined to wreck his plan to deliver Brexit at all costs by Oct. 31, with the first parliamentary vote in the clash expected around 10 p.m Tuesday night. If he loses, Johnson’s officials have said he will set in motion preparations for a poll to elect a new government on Oct. 14.

Nearly 1,400 people were detained in a violent police crackdown on an opposition protest in Moscow, a Russian group that monitors police arrests said Sunday, adding that was the largest number of detentions at a rally in the Russian capital this decade.

Puerto Rico’s governor on Sunday said he would not seek re-election next year but refused to resign as the island braced for more protests by demonstrators demanding he step down over leaked chat messages.

A day before a planned general strike and street demonstrations in the bankrupt U.S. territory, Ricardo Rossello, 40, said he respected the wishes of Puerto Ricans and would not seek a second term in November 2020 elections.

He also said he would resign as head of the New Progressive Party (PNP) but would remain as governor until the end of his term in January, 2021.

The Tariff Man is on track to hit hard again this summer, and it's bad news for EU companies ranging from Dutch cheesemakers to industrial heavyweight Airbus.

European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström warned the EU's trade ministers at a meeting on Monday that they need to steel themselves for U.S. President Donald Trump to hit billions of euros worth of European goods with tariffs, ramping up a decadeslong dispute over unwarranted subsidies for Airbus.

Three officials in the room said Malmström warned them that the U.S. has rejected attempts to negotiate a deal on aviation subsidies and added that Washington is now willing to proceed with the tariffs, which would be legal under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

Poland's ruling Law and Justice party won surprisingly strong backing in the European Parliament elections, with a majority announced Monday.

Candidates of the far-right party, known as PiS, received 46.01 percent of the vote, compared with 37.87 percent for the five-party opposition European Coalition of parties and 6.02 for the left-wing Wiosna, or Springtime, party. PiS won 27 seats in the country's European Parliament delegation, compared to 22 for the European Coalition and three for Wiosna. The results were better for PiS than those announced from exit polls.
