Statue of John Lewis unveiled in Georgia to honor late civil rights leader

Statue of John Lewis in Georgia

A 12ft-tall statue of John Lewis was unveiled in Georgia on Saturday morning, honoring the legacy of the civil rights leader and congressman who died in 2020.

The statue stands in Decatur Square outside the historic Decatur courthouse in outer Atlanta, in a district Lewis represented in Congress from 1987 to his death. Lewis was 80 when he died due to complications related to pancreatic cancer.

The statue replaces a Confederate obelisk that was originally erected in 1908 and was taken down in June 2020 amid the Black Lives Matter protests that spread across the country after the murder of George Floyd.

Republicans Wrap Up Impeachment Inquiry Against Joe Biden With No Impeachment

Impeaching Biden not to happenHouse Republicans on Monday said Joe Biden engaged in “impeachable conduct” in a final report on their investigation into the president — but don’t expect the House to vote on articles of impeachment anytime soon.

After investigating the Biden family for the past year and a half, interviewing dozens of witnesses and reviewing thousands of documents, Republicans couldn’t find clear evidence of official wrongdoing by the president.

Instead, their final report faults Biden for having repeatedly interacted with his son Hunter Biden’s business partners and giving them the impression that paying Hunter Biden would win them influence with Joe Biden.

“Defendant’s decision to trade [Hamby] was motivated by [Hamby’s] announcement that she was pregnant after signing her contract extension,” reads the 18-page complaint, filed in U.S. district court in Nevada on Monday.

A pro-Israel super PAC helped defeat one Squad member. Now it’s going after another, Cori Bush

Coti Bush targeted by AipacA deep-pocketed pro-Israel super PAC that helped defeat one member of the congressional group known as the Squad is now pushing to oust another — Missouri Democrat Cori Bush.

Bush, of St. Louis, has been a vocal critic of how Israel responded when attacked by Hamas in October, calling the Israeli retaliation an “ethnic cleansing campaign,” and she was among the few House members who opposed a resolution supporting Israel. She boycotted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before Congress last week, calling him a “war criminal.”

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super political action committee, United Democracy Project, has spent more than $8.4 million to unseat Bush in her Aug. 6 Democratic primary against St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell, according to federal campaign finance records.

TVNL Comment: AIPAC is a foreign agent.  It works for the interest of Israel.  It is outrageous that AIPAC can control the outcome of US elections.

Johnson, one of the so-called Tennessee 3, will face Blackburn in U.S. Senate race

Gloria JohnsonDemocratic state Rep. Gloria Johnson, who was catapulted onto the national stage as a member of the so-called Tennessee Three after her Republican colleagues in the statehouse tried to expel her and two others, will face U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn for one of Tennessee’s two U.S. Senate seats. Blackburn and Johnson secured the Republican and Democratic nominations in Thursday’s primary.

Johnson parlayed the attention that she and state Reps. Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson captured into her campaign to win the nomination and face Blackburn, who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2018.

Some analysts say Tennessee’s Democratic enthusiasm over Vice President Kamala Harris (Tennessee delegates to the Democratic National Convention were among the first in the nation to support Harris) coupled with growing disapproval of the state’s Republican supermajority, might bolster Johnson’s campaign.
