Sharon defiant over Israeli 'wall' - Israel has insisted work will continue on a controversial barrier separating much of the West Bank from Israel and Jewish-settled areas, despite recent criticism from the US. - TVNL comment: In our opinion this was a staged protest by Bush in order to appear as if he was doing the right thing. There was no exectation that Sharon would concede to this request. US warns Israel on settlements - There are some 150 settlements in the Palestinian territories - Washington has told Israel that developing Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories goes against the peace plan known as the roadmap. Mideast Violence Leaves 3 Arabs and Israeli Soldier Dead - Three Palestinians, two of them gunmen from Hamas, and an Israeli soldier were killed when Israeli forces touched off a firefight and then angry protests in the West Bank city of Nablus while conducting what the army called a hunt for bomb makers. Kofi Annan says Israeli 'wall' puts peace at risk - Israel has swatted aside a formal complaint by the UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, over its refusal to halt construction of a wall that cuts deep into the West Bank and slices through Palestinian neighbourhoods of East Jerusalem. - Mr Annan said the fence "could damage the longer-term prospects for peace by making the creation of an independent, viable and contiguous Palestinian state more difficult". - Israel said it was speeding up construction and may take other "unilateral steps" if the Palestinians delay peace talks. - TVNL Comment: This is a perfect example of self fulfilling prophecy. UN to hold emergency session on separation fence - UNITED NATIONS - The UN General Assembly will meet - in emergency session on Monday to consider putting more pressure on Israel after it rejected a demand to stop building a barrier deep into the Palestinian West Bank. - While Israel had a "right and duty to protect - its people against terrorist attacks," Annan said building the wall was "a deeply counterproductive act" at a time the Jewish state and the Palestinians were being asked to follow the "road map.
