Heart disease in children exposed to 9/11 dust

Sixteen years after the World Trade Center collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001, a study finds children exposed to toxic chemicals released during the collapse are at early risk of heart disease.

The study, published Friday in Environmental International, was conducted by researchers at New York University Langone Health and NYU School of Medicine.

"Since 9/11, we have focused a lot of attention on the psychological and mental fallout from witnessing the tragedy, but only now are the potential physical consequences of being within the disaster zone itself becoming clear," Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an associate professor at NYU School of Medicine and health epidemiologist, said in a press release.

Saudi embassy may have funded 9/11 'dry run': report

New evidence in a 9/11 lawsuit against the government of Saudi Arabia alleges the kingdom's embassy in Washington, DC may have funded a test run for the deadly attacks in 2001, according to a US newspaper report.

The evidence was submitted as part of a class action lawsuit against the government of Saudi Arabia, the New York Post reported on Saturday.

Justices rule ex-Bush officials can't be sued in terrorism case

SC Justice Joseph Kennedy The Supreme Court on Monday said former George W. Bush administration officials can’t be held liable for the unlawful detainment and abuse suffered by undocumented immigrants detained after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

In a 4-2 ruling, the court ruled that six men arrested during an investigation into the attack after they were found living in the country illegally could not sue the officials, including former Attorney General John Ashcroft and former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

The men, all of whom are of Arab or South Asian descent, claimed the federal officials violated their due process and equal protection rights by holding them in restrictive conditions of confinement.

9/11 still killing as retired cop and firefighter die of cancers

9/11 first responders still dying Two more first responders have died of 9/11-related cancers, officials said Friday. Retired FDNY Firefighter and Brooklyn native William Gormley, 53, died following a short battle with lung cancer Wednesday, his family said.

A day earlier, retired NYPD Detective William Kinane, 60, of Breezy Point, Queens, died of a 9/11-related illness.

The two deaths threatened to overwhelm the Marine Park Funeral Home — which serves both Marine Park and the Rockaways — so Gormley’s family was asked to move the service to another location, family members said.

Raymond J. Pfeifer, 9/11 Firefighter Who Sought Care for Survivors, Dies at 59

Raymond Pfeifer dies at 59 Raymond J. Pfeifer, who spent eight months digging through the toxic debris of the collapsed World Trade Center for the remains of fellow firefighters and other victims and years lobbying, successfully, for health benefits for those who survived, died on Sunday in a hospice in Port Washington, N.Y. He was 59.

The cause was complications of cancers he contracted while searching the Lower Manhattan site after the 2001 terrorist attack, his wife, Caryn, said.

“I’m being poisoned, and I’m dying, every single day, because of terrorism,” Mr. Pfeifer told WPIX-TV in 2014.
