Beryl − the first hurricane of the 2024 season − was gaining strength and was expected to rapidly intensify before striking the Windward Islands with powerful winds and flooding storm surge, forecasters said Saturday.
The Category 1 storm was about 660 miles east of the Windward Islands on Saturday night and was approaching Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.
Beryl is forecast to become a major hurricane overnight Sunday, packing 115 mph winds as it arrives in the islands. Hurricane warnings are in effect for Barbados and St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadine Islands and Grenada.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for Martinique and Tobago, and a tropical storm watch is in effect for Dominica and Tobago. Other advisories are likely as Hurricane Beryl moves closer to the Caribbean.<
